A gang of 4 shoplifters injured a 24-year-old clerk at a Tesco Lotus minimart on Soi Khao Talo while they were escaping from the store. However, CCTV footage recorded clear images of the two female and two male suspects.

PATTAYA – January 28, 2013 [PDN]; at 6:30 p.m., a report of a minimart Lotus Express clerk being injured by shoplifters was received by Pol. Lt. Col. Saneh Yosroongreuang, investigation officer, Nong Preu police station. He rushed to the scene with Pol. Col. Somneuk Jankate, Superintendent, Nong Preu police station; Pol. Capt. Kornphong Sukvisit, Deputy Inspector; the detective police team; and the rescue officers of Sawangboribultharmmasatharn Pattaya foundation.

The incident occurred at the minimart Lotus Express on Soi Khao Talo, Moo 10 Tambon Nong Preu. The small minimart is located opposite to Khao Talo Plaza market, about 50 meters from the Khao Talo sentry box.

The thieves had used a knife to hack a Tesco employee, who suffered a severe wound in his buttocks that was bleeding heavily. The injured clerk was identified as Mr. Sitthiphong Phojan, age 24. Rescue officers performed first aid and sent the victim to Pattaya Memorial hospital, where his wound required 30 stitches to close.

Police questioned the store manager, Mr. Manuschai Neamparn, age 23. He said that in the evening of January 27, some thieves had shoplifted many items from the store that were worth about 5,000 THB. So he examined the CCTV footage and saw two suspicious Thai women; the first one was fat with light skin, and the other one was thin with dark skin. Both of them appeared to be between ages 30-35.

The CCTV footage showed them taking name brand cosmetics items from store shelves and hiding them in their jackets. They then got a car to escape. So Mr. Manuschai copied the images of the suspicious women from the CCTV, and posted them in the store for employees to see.

On the next day, the fat woman came into the store again, to act like she was going to buy goods. Mr. Manuschai immediately recognized her face. So he yelled for the staff employees to assist to restrain her. The fat woman resisted being detained and struggled against the five employees.

But unknown to the staff, an accomplice of the thief was also in the store, a man about 25-30 years old, wearing black jeans and a black shirt. He had acted like he came in to buy beer, and was paying for the beer at the cashier counter. When he saw the fat woman was being captured, he grabbed a bottle of beer and tried to whack the store employees.

But after seeing that he was outnumbered by the five clerks, the man ran outside the store and shouted at another male friend, who was sitting in a waiting car outside. The car was a golden bronze Honda Civic with no license plate. The man inside the car was about 20-25 years old, about 165-170 cm tall, with a slim build, and white skin color. He was wearing black jeans and a white long-sleeve shirt.

The man then took out a long knife hidden in the car, and used the knife to hack at the store employees to help his fellow thieves escape. Mr. Sitthiphong fell down while trying to stop the thieves from escaping, and was stabbed in the buttocks until he got injured. The thieves then ran to get inside the car and drove away quickly along Sukhumvit Road.

The police later inspected the footage from the store’s CCTV, which had recorded the entire incident, as well as the Honda the thieves escaped in. The recorded images clearly showed their faces and appearances.

In addition, another CCTV in front of the nearby pharmacy had also recorded the event. The pharmacy cooperated with police to supply their CCTV footage, so the police were confident that they had enough evidence to trace the thieves.

The mass media and public was asked to help find the shoplifters by Pol. Capt. Kornphong Sukvisit, Deputy Inspector, Nong Preu police station. He asked that if anyone recognizes the suspicious thieves in the pictures that are distributed, or if anyone knows the whereabouts of the suspects, to please notify the police.

The police can be contacted 24 hours a day at the following phone numbers: 081-5778865 (Pol. Col. Somneuk Jankate, Superintendent); and 089-7471112 (Pol. Capt. Kornphong).
