An ex-convict who robbed and raped women riding motorbikes was lured into a trap by police by using phone sex. The elder sister of a victim arranged to meet the suspect for sex, after he made obscene calls using her sister’s stolen phone. He showed up for the appointment and was arrested.

CHACHOENGSAO – September 16, 2012 [PDN]; at 2 p.m., the arrest of predatory sex criminal was announced at the police command unit of Chachoengsao province. Announcing the arrest were Pol. Maj. Gen. Sombat Buareung, Commander, Chachoengsao province; Pol. Col. Vinai Jitproong, Deputy Commander; Pol. Col. Naratchaphol Lertratchatapapat, Superintendent; Pol. Lt. Col. Chanin Detchewa, Deputy Superintendent; and the detective police team and the police of Bang Kla police station.

The suspect was identified as Mr. Sompong Thong-uam, age 24, from Tambon Sibedsok, Amphur Baan Pho, Chachoengsao province. Mr. Sompong, who works as a painter, is charged with stealing property and raping women, according to the Oct. 13, 2012 arrest warrant issued by Chachoengsao provincial court.

Pol. Maj. Gen. Sombat said the suspect is very harmful to society because he has attacked many females in a widespread area. He usually committed his crimes after midnight when his victims were riding their motorbike alone.

The suspect would ride alongside them, and then kick their motorbikes until they fell down. He would then hit victims with a baton and knock them unconscious and steal their property. If the victim was good looking, he would rape her too.

On June 5, 2012, the suspect used a rope to tie around the neck of the female victim in the restroom of the PTT petrol pump Bang Phai, near the police station in Chachoengsao. He then stole her Nokia mobile phone and escaped on his motorbike.

Several months later, in mid-September 2012, the predator struck again. He was riding his motorbike on a road near a canal in Tambon Don Sine, Amphur Ban Pho, Chachoengsao province.

He followed a female victim riding on her motorbike, and tried to kick her motorbike to make it fall down. When her motorbike didn’t fall, he used a baton to club the woman unconscious. He then stole 300 THB from her, and escaped on a Honda Scoopy motorbike with no license plate.

On September 26, 2012, the suspect made a similar violent attack in the area of Moo 2, Tambon Sanarmjan, Amphur Baan Pho. His female victim was identified as Ms. Viphada Sonkhiew, age 23.

He had followed the victim on his motorbike and kicked her motorbike until it fell. Then he used his baton to club the victim until she was unconscious. He stole her purse containing a mobile phone and 400 THB cash before escaping on his motorbike .

At the end of September, 2012, the predator struck again on the road in front of Wat Nern Lang Tao, Tambon Baan Chang, Amphur Panusnikom, Chonburi province. He rode his motorbike to follow the victim on her motorbike at night. He kicked her motorbike to topple it, and then raped the victim and stole 5,000 THB cash, before escaping on his motorbike.

On October 4, 2012 the defendant attacked two females on the same day. He followed the first victim and kicked her motorbike until it fell down in the area of Tambon Klong Na, Amphur Muang, Chachoengsao province. He then stole the bank account book of the victim and her identity card, which he used to withdraw 5,000 THB cash from a Krungthai Bank branch in Chachoengsao.

Later, the suspect kicked down the motorbike of another female riding on a Bang Kla road in Tambon Tathonglarng. But the victim didn’t have any property worth stealing, so he took her into the forest and raped her.

But the violent predator was finally caught by high-tech police work, as described by Pol. Col. Naratchaphol Lertratchatapapat of the Bang Kla police station.

The downfall of the suspect was his liking for phone sex. After he stole his victim’s mobile phone, he put in a SIM card and called the numbers stored in the phone. If a female answered and she had a nice voice, he would talk about sex using obscene language, or ask them to have sex.

Police were able to detect the suspect’s usage of the stolen phone, and discovered he had made an obscene phone to the elder sister of the victim. So the police worked with the sister of the victim, the daughter of the village head, to trap the suspect. The elder sister engaged in a lengthy phone sex conversation with the suspect, and then made an appointment to meet him.

They agreed to meet for sex in a rental room in the area of moo 3 in Tambon Ban Suan, Amphur Muang, Chonburi province. When the suspect showed up for the appointment, police arrested him. After his arrest, the suspect confessed to six robbery assaults, but claimed he had only raped two victims.

The police still didn’t believe him. So they have encouraged other probable victims to cooperate with the police. Other victims may contact either the Blang Kla or the Chachoengsao police stations to identify the defendant, and notify to prosecute him further according to the law, to get rid of this danger to society.

The police commander also revealed that the suspect had recently been released from prison after being convicted of consuming amphetamines. Initially, the police charged the suspect in an accusation of assaulting others and stealing their property and raping others.

The reporter noted that after the arrest of the suspect by the Bang Kla police team, officers from other police stations came to request to pick him up, so they could continue his prosecution for other crimes the suspect had committed in their districts.

Well played Thai police and the sister of one of the victims. Lets hope the effort put into the arrest is rewarded with a suitably lengthy prison sentence.
