Locals of Koh Larn island closed the frontage road in Pattaya to drive out Mr. Sutham, Pattaya Deputy for supporting investors deforesting Koh Larn island.
Pattaya, October 5, 2011 (PDN) The traffic on the main road of North Pattaya came to a standstill as more than 700 Koh Larn locals came to protest and drive out Mr.Sutham Petkate, Deputy of Pattaya.
Mr. Booncherd Boonying, the president of Koh Larn Island Community said that the cause of this protest is Mr.Sutham supporting a group of investers who want to cut down the trees on an area of more than 320 rais on Koh Larn island.
They were not aware that Pattaya City Hall had supported this action. Every year the islanders have been planting trees for the Royal Project on Koh Larn.
Mr. Booncherd Boonying, also said that, Pattaya City Hall should cancel the land concession and Mr. Sutham Petkate’s authorization.
They said, all of the time Mr. Sutham had worked on Koh Larn, he had only caused problems. But he was able to provide concessions for the investors to builds resorts and restaurants without consent of the locals. Many other issues that the locals raised were neglected, so they had to stand up and protest.
Here are four demands of the protester:
1) Cancel the land concession in Koh Larn now.
2) Move Mr.Sutham Petkate out of Koh Larn immediately.
3) Allow the locals of Koh Larn to vote for every project in Koh Larn.
4) Return the forest concession area to be a public area
Mr. Ronnakit Aeksing, Lord Mayor of Pattaya, Mr. Sanit Boonmachai, Mr. Prai Mungkung and other members of Pattaya City Council met and discussed with the protesters and they agreed to the protesters demands and have relieved Mr. Sutham Petkate of his duties in Koh Larn.
Regarding the remaining demands, the City Council will solve the problems and will inform the locals accordingly.
