The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is to step up promotional efforts in the Middle East market by inviting a group of 25 beauty contestants from Lebanon to visit Koh Samui during June 24-27, 2011
Bangkok, June 15, 2011 — The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is to step up promotional efforts in the Middle East market by inviting a group of 25 beauty contestants from Lebanon to visit Koh Samui during June 24-27, 2011.
The trip is being organised by the TAT Dubai and the Middle East Office together with the Samui Tourism Promotion Association, Bangkok Airways and local operators on Koh Samui.
Like in many parts of the world, beauty contests are popular on TV in the Middle East. The TAT has been using such contests in several countries to present Thailand as a backdrop. This extremely cost-effective marketing effort catches the attention of the female audience and plays a major role in influencing theirs decision to visit Thailand.
The contestants and the entire support staff will stay at Melati Beach Resort and Chaweng Regent Beach Resort. They will also join the volunteer activity of the Samui Green Island Project; such as, planting coconut trees around the island, planting orchids in Ang Thong National Marine Park, cooking popular local dishes and desserts from coconut products, and enjoying a spa treatment.
All these activities will be broadcast on four TV channels and cable TV all over the Middle East region, a potential viewer audience of 50 million people. The timing is also right because June – August are the hot summer months when many Middle Eastern travellers tend to seek cooler climates abroad.
Mrs Juthaporn Rerngronasa, Deputy Governor for International Marketing (Europe, Africa, Middle East and Americas) said, “Even though the number of Lebanese visitors to Thailand is very low, it is showing a good rate of growth. The winner of the Miss Lebanon contest will be the only representative from the Middle East region to participate in the Miss Universe or Miss World contest. So people in the Middle East will be watching the Miss Lebanon contest with great interest.”
Koh Samui has been chosen as a backdrop destination in order to boost its popularity in the Middle East and expand the range of well-known spots beyond the traditional Pattaya and Phuket.
Since 2007, the number of Middle East visitor arrivals to Thailand has showed a rapid growth. In 2010, arrivals totalled 499,045, up 21.10%.
Located in the Gulf of Thailand, about 700 kilometres south of Bangkok, Koh Samui is one of Thailand’s most famous and popular attractions. Known for its popular tropical beaches, the island offers a mixed combination of vibrant day and nightlife alongside fishing villages and marine parks.
A 50-kilometre paved road encircles the island, making it easy to get around. Hat Chaweng and Hat Lamai are Samui’s most beautiful beaches, with a huge selection of accommodation suitable for every budget. A group of 48 nearby islets in the surrounding waters of the Gulf offer excellent diving and snorkelling opportunities.
