As Don Muang Airport opens for domestic services once again, Thailand‘s main airport regulator, Admiral Bannawit Kengrian, has hinted that international flights may well soon again be on the agenda for Don Muang. A detailed plan of refurbishment is to be put to the Airports of Thailand at their forthcoming meeting, Admiral Bannawit said. This will include renovating passenger lounges for international flights and proposals for services for international airlines.

Bangkok’s old airport, Don Muang is due to reopen on Sunday March 25th after being restricted to private and charter flights for over 6 months, since September 28th. However, it has now lost its privileged code name, no longer designated BKK, which has now been taken over by Suvarnabhumi, Don Muang’s new designation is DMK. Ms Kalaya Pakakrong, the Acting President of Airports of Thailand (AoT) urged passengers to check the codes on their tickets to avoid confusion.

Last Friday (9th March) my friends arrived at Suvarnabhumi Airport. To pick them up I had several options. Since global warming and environmental protection are these days an important issue I chose to travel by bus. For Northern or Central Pattaya residents is the service from Roong Rueang Bus Company a good option. BANGKOK, Feb 17– International air carriers have rejected calls to move some of their flights back to Bangkok’s old airport at Don Muang to ease congestion while repairs are carried out at the new airport, saying they preferred Suvarnabhumi as the main hub.

The partial solution to Suvarnabhumi’s current problems with manpower and runway repairs is gaining momentum as plans are apparently being consolidated to divert flights to Bangkok’s old Don Muang Airport. Ms Kulya Pakakrong, Acting President of the Airports of Thailand, is leading the team currently re-assessing the total financial costs of renovating Don Muang Airport which will initially be presented to the Transport Minister, Thira Haocharoen and later, the cabinet, hopefully within the next fortnight.
