A 21-year-old Thai man with girlfriend troubles survived a drunken leap from the 5th floor of a Jomtien condominium building. He told rescuers he got drunk to celebrate the New Year, but after arguing with his girlfriend, he decided to spite her by jumping off a nearby building.

A 57-year-old Austrian man drowned while swimming at Bangphra beach in Sriracha. His Laotian girlfriend told police they were drinking and eating on the beach for the New Year festival. The Austrian then went for a swim, but quietly drowned with no one noticing, until it was too late.

A 43-year-old pregnant woman on a motorbike was killed in a collision with a pickup truck in Jomtien. She was on a motorbike driven by her husband, who was making a left turn in front of the oncoming truck at a Sukhumvit Road intersection. In the holiday week from December 27 to January 3, traffic fatalities peak across Thailand during the so-called “Seven Dangerous Days.” More than 300 people died in accidents last year.

A conference was held at Pattaya City Hall to address the growing problem of unlicensed taxicabs operating in Pattaya. The rogue taxis, which mostly have black license plates, frequently ignore traffic laws and often block traffic to pick up and drop off passengers. A 55-year-old Russian man hanged himself in the bathroom of his Jomtien hotel, after his wife abruptly left him. They had checked into the hotel on Christmas Day. Employees noticed the husband getting drunk and abusive to his wife, until she moved out the next night. His dead body was found by a hotel maintenance worker the following morning.

A hysterical Russian woman who appeared to be drunk caused a commotion at Jomtien beach, by claiming her 16-year-old daughter had drowned while they were swimming together. Witnesses said the woman had come alone to the beach. Police then located her daughter sleeping in their hotel room.

A Nissan Serena van began burning on Sukhumvit road while the driver was coming to Pattaya from Sattahip. He quickly parked and fled the vehicle after flames erupted under the hood. The fire engulfed the van and caused the LPG gas tank to explode. No one was injured as firefighters extinguished the blaze.

The new port and bridge for Koh Samet island has just opened for public use, after construction was temporarily halted due a problem with building permits. Local officials presided over the grand opening. A budget of 170 million THB was designated to design and build the new facility.

A proposed new law before the Thailand Senate would impose harsher punishment on people convicted of cruelty to animals that would include jail time. The law was introduced by a group of veterinarians after an incident in Sattahip where a dog was stabbed to death 17 times by a foreigner.

Two British men, one of them 77 years old, survived a small plane crash in a grassy field in Pathum Thani. The men were returning to Bangkok from a business trip when the plane’s engine failed. The plane skidded on the ground after landing and overturned. The men reportedly suffered minor injuries.

A 45-year-old rescue volunteer was killed by a speeding pickup truck while directing traffic at an accident scene in Sriracha. The pickup driver was returning from a New Year’s company party. He admitted being drunk to the police, and said he did not see the volunteer standing on the road.
