PATTAYA – April 29, 2013 [PDN]: At 1:30 a.m., a report of a theft occurring at a minimart was received by Pol. Lt. Thanongsak Inphadoong, Deputy Inspector, Pattaya police station.
The incident occurred at a Family Mart shop in the area of Pattaya beach, Chonburi province. At the scene, officers found the staff of Family Mart shop waiting to point out the thief to arrest, later identified as Mr. Phassakorn Thanawatchai, age 40.
The suspect had stolen a 1-liter bottle of mineral drinking water, and was standing to drink the stolen water in front of the shop. When he saw the police, Mr. Phassakorn urged the officers to arrest him, which greatly confused the police.
From searching Mr. Phassakorn’s body, the police found more than 100,000 THB cash in the pocket of his pants. However, he claimed that it is the money for the hiring of his employees and equipment, because he was hired to be the contractor to build the building from a capitalist.
But there was a fire that burnt the building until it got damaged. So the capitalist asked for the damage costs from him for more than 300,000 THB. The investigation officer had made an appointment with him for April 30, 2013, to acknowledge the accusation of being careless which caused the fire.
This made him feel so stressed that he wanted to be in jail for a while to escape from the problem. So he decided to steal the drinking water in the minimart, and wait for the police to arrest him.
Pol. Lt. Thanongsak said this was a strange case of someone stealing drinking water in the minimart even though he has a lot of cash. But because he drank the water and didn’t consent to pay the shop, if the police arrested him then he will be punished.
So the police negotiated to compromise with him, but Mr. Phassakorn still tried to get the police to arrest him. For more than 1 hour, the police tried to console him and relieve his stress. Finally Mr. Phassakorn consented to pay for the drinking water. Then the police made notes for evidence and allowed him to go back home.
