BANGKOK – January 8, 2013 [PDN]; At the Royal Thai Police office, a warning was issued to Thai women to be wary of African suitors who may be drug smugglers, said police spokesman Pol. Col. Anucha Romyanan.
In the past year, the police have been coordinating with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. They reported that many Thai women have been arrested after being forced to transport drugs by an African gang.
Along with Thai women, many Asian women have been arrested on drug smuggling charges, especially in Brazil, Bahrain, China and Taiwan, police said.
In the country of Thailand, police arrested 109 Thai women for trying to smuggle drugs through the airport and the Thailand border. In most of the cases, the drug being smuggled was cocaine. The Thai women told police that their foreign husbands had forced them to smuggle drugs.
Police said the African con men operated by coming to stay in Thailand, where they pretended to sell clothes and jewels. They would try to befriend Thai women and develop a relationship that would lead to marriage.
Then after marrying the Thai women, the Africans would tell their wives to find someone to smuggle drugs for them. But if their wives could not find anyone, the Africans would force their wives to smuggle the drugs illegally.
