Bangkok Hula Hoopers Swirl To New World Record

In a proud Olympian moment, 2,690 people in Bangkok set a new Guinness World Record for most people playing hula hoops. The agile Bangkokians wrested the title from previous record-holder Taiwan, beating its total of 2,497 hula hoopers.

BANGKOK – September 16, 2012 [PDN]: at the Thai-Japan (DinDang) stadium, Bangkok governor M.R. Sukhumphan Boripat opened the ceremonial start of Thailand’s world-record attempt in the “Bangkokians Power to Play Hula Hoops for Health.”

About 3,000 people showed up to help set a new Guinness World Record for most people simultaneously playing hula hoops. The purpose of the event was to promote exercising for physical health, and to be a merit for the occasion of HM the King’s 84th birthday.

Mr. Manit Tacha-aphichoke, director of the Bureau of Culture, Sports and Tourism, said there was co-operation from people in 50 districts to join the activity. They will now be a part of history after setting the hula hoop record.

To set the record, each of the 3,000 people had to use three different techniques of swirling the hoops around their bodies. Each different style lasted for 1.3 minutes. The Guinness observers did not count anyone who dropped the hoop.

In the end, a record total of 2,690 Bangkok people successfully finished the event, to break Taiwan’s previous world record of 2,497 people.

It is hoped the world record will spark more interest in Hula hoops, one of the few sports that can be exercised at any age. It does not take up much space and is easy and convenient.
