Brit Mom Offers 500,000 THB Reward For Daughter’s Killer

After 12 years, police still have no suspects in the Chiang Mai rape and murder of a 23-year-old British tourist. Her desperate mother has offered a reward of 10,000 British pounds to anyone who can provide information about the killer.

BANGKOK – August 9, 2012 [PDN]; a reward equal to 493,000 THB was announced relating to an unsolved Chiang Mai rape-murder case by Pol. Col. Songsak Raksaksakul, the Commissioner of foreign business unit and international crime case, Department of Special Investigation; Mr. Andrew John, Superintendent of Detection Division Dyfed-Powys, England; Mrs. Susan Jones, mother; and Mr. Garage Jones, the elder brother of Ms. Christy Sara Jones; and an officer from the British embassy.

The reward was announced at a press conference at the Operation Center of Special Cases, north Chiang Mai province.

On August 10, 2000, a visiting tourist, Ms. Christy Sara Jones, 23, was raped and tied around her neck until she died at Aree guest house, Mulmuang road, Amphur Muang, Chiang Mai.

Pol. Col. Songsak said the DSI took over the case in 2005 and coordinated forces with the British police and British government to find the suspect. Authorities inspected the DNA of 22 suspicious people living in the surrounding areas, and investigating many foreigners, but still didn’t find any DNA match with semen found on the woman’s body.

The statute of limitations for the case is set to expire in 8 years. However, the police remain confident that they will eventually arrest the killer.

The British police and relatives said the reward will be paid to people with information that leads to identifying the criminal and his arrest.
