PATTAYA – July 14, 2012 [PDN]; At 3 a.m. investigative police on duty at the Pattaya police station, Chonburi province, were notified that a van had collided with CCTV pole and the driver was trapped inside with serious injuries. The incident occurred at a red-light intersection in North Pattaya at Sukhumvit Road, in front of Thai Life Insurance Co. Ltd., Moo 6 Tambon Na Kleu, Amphur Banglamung.
Police rushed to the scene along with a rescue officer from the Sawangboribul Pattaya foundation in an emergency equipment car. At the scene, they found a white Toyota van, license number HOR BOR 2026 Bangkok, which was severely damaged after colliding with the CCTV pole.
Trapped inside the van was the injured driver, Mr. Chalermphol Thongkham, 26, address 59/6Moo 2 Tambon Bangyapraek, Amphur Muang, Samutsakorn province. The rescue officer assisted in removing him from the van and rushed him to Bangkok-Pattaya hospital in critical condition.
Both the van and the CCTV pole were badly damaged. Police found evidence that the van had exited Sukhumivit Road and traveled about 50 meters before colliding with the pole. The security guard of Thai Life Insurance Co., Ltd. and people nearby said they heard a very long noise of the car’s impact and then heard a sound like an explosion. They hurried outside and found the van had collided violently with the pole, so they notified police.
An initial investigation of the van by police revealed it was apparently being illegally used as a VIP van for the Kalokkala tour company, and has been driven all over Thailand to pick up customers. The police made notes for evidence, and as for the cause of this accident, assumed that Mr. Chalermphol was so tired that he either fell asleep at the wheel or may have been drunk.
Because the CCTV pole was severely damaged, after the injured driver recovers the police will investigate him again in order to prosecute further according to the law.
