BANGLAMUNAG – July 11, 2012 [PDN]; At 3:30 p.m., Pol.Lt.Col.Winai Horian was notified by investigation officers that three people had been killed in a gun battle on Songpeenong hill, Nawang Line Road- Pongsaked, moo 4, tambon Takiantia, amphoe Banglamung, Chonburi.
He rushed to the scene with Pol.Maj.Gen. Jamnong Ratanakul, commissioner of Chonburi Provincial police; Pol.Col. SuphatheeBoonkrong, vice commissioner; Pol.Col.Somnuk Janket, director of Banglamoong police station; Pol.Lt.Col.Suphachat Piammanas, vice director of suppression division; Pol.Lt.Col.Jakkrin Tuasupap, vice director of investigation division; the investigative police forces; the doctor on the duty of Banglamoong; and the rescue team from Sawang Boriboon Thammasathan Muang Pattaya foundation.
The crime scene was a cassava plantation on a hill far from Nawan-Pongsaked Road. The hill was higher than 1 km. At the base of the hill, police saw a canvas hammock tied to trees, and many personal belongings suggesting that people had been staying on the top of the hill. At about 500 meters from the hammock site, police found the body of Mr.Sirichai Siripaitoon, 32, a volunteer police officer at Banglamoong police station, living at the address 94/33, moo 4, tambon Takiantia. He was found lying face down, wearing his police volunteer uniform. He had been shot by a 9 mm gun in his right chest. There was a pool of blood next to his body. A .38 revolver gun was lying on the ground near his hand, along with handcuffs and a communication radio.
About 10 meters away, police found the body of a Cambodian, about 25 to 30-years-old, lying on his side, wearing only green pants. He had been shot in the face by a gun of undetermined origin. The Cambodian was holding a 9 mm gun in his hand, while his other hand was apparently holding a small bomb of some kind. Police also found clothes and a black bag near his body.
The body of another Cambodian man was found about 20 meters away. He was shirtless also, wearing black jeans. He had been shot by 3 bullets of unknown caliber. He was holding a Chinese-made 9 mm gun. In his pocket, there was a hand-sized bomb. Police gathered and seized all the evidence.
Police questioned Mr.Montian Boonkrajang, 42, the head of the village of tambon Takiantia, for details. Mr. Montian told police that some of villagers had reported to him that a gang of Cambodians staying on Songpeenong hill had been stealing from people’s homes. So he and the volunteer police officer Mr.Sirichai went to check.
They found five men resting at the base of the hill, so they showed themselves to check them, but the gang shot at them and ran away. So he and Mr.Sirichai shot them back. In the resulting gun battle, Mr. Sirichai was shot dead, two Cambodians were killed, and the other three men escaped.
Pol.Maj.Gen.Jamnong Ratnakul said the police felt sorry for Mr.Sirichai-police volunteer’s family and they would protect his family. To catch the thieves that had gotten away, he commanded the police forces to encircle the area. But the escaped criminals still were not found. However, the police force and investigation team were directed to track the fugitives down by continuing to search and ask around in the area until they are found and arrested.
