SATTAHIP – May 5, 2012 [PDN]; Pol. Lt. Col. Vittaya Koomvong, Mabtapud police, Rayong province was notified that toluene tank used to produce rubber and plastic exploded at BST Elastomers Co., Ltd. and at Bangkok Synthetics Co., Ltd. located in number 8 Mabtapud industrial estate, Rayong province.
Three workers were severely injured and 27 workers sustained minor injuries.
The 13 workers were sent to Mabtapud hospital; 12 to Bangkok-Rayong hospital; 2 to Mongkut Rayong hospital; and 3 to Rayong hospital.

IRPC (public) Co., Ltd. Rayong and Mabtapud municipality sent fire trucks. Tambon Samnak Torn municipality,Tambon Baan Chang municipality and Mabtapud industrial estate also rushed to the scene to assist. Vice Admiral Choomphol Vongvekin, Admiral Surasak Roonrerngrom Thai Royal Navy also provided assistance.
Mr. Senee Jittakasem, Rayong governor inspected the site of the explosion and assisted the locals and assured them not to be frightened because the chemical substance is not as dangerous as benzene substance, which is also processed at the plant.
He said that before the explosion occurred, the employees had transferred the toluene from tank to tank and suddenly there was fire which they could not stop and then the tank exploded.

The municipality moved everybody out of the area because of the wind direction that blew strong chemical smell to Amphur Baan Chang and Amphur Sattahip.
BST Elastomers Co., Ltd. (Bste) is affiliated to Bangkok synthetics Co., Ltd. producers of synthetic rubber: Polybutadiens Rubber (BR) and Styrene Butadiene Rubber (SBR).
Later at Rayong hospital, two workers were reported dead due to severe burn injuries. They were identified as Mr. Chaiyo Aksornsri age 30, the employee of BST Elastomers Co., Ltd. and Mr. Hatsanai Jansetthee, the employee of Bangkok synthetics Co., Ltd.
