Chanthaburi Horticultural Research Center of the department of agriculture, Ministry of Agriculture and co-operatives, opens a sampling of 18 breeds of ancient durian, for two days from 10:30-12:00.
Mr.Sombat Tongtao, the director of Chanthaburi Horticultural Research Center under the Department of Ministry of Agriculture and cooperatives, said that from May 19-20 2012, the Horticultural Research Center in Khlung district Chantaburi, according to the policy of Mr. Jirakorn Kosaikawee, the director-general of the department of agriculture, Ministry of Agriculture and co-operatives organizer of the fair under the motto “free sampling of delicious and ancient breed of durians, in Chanthaburi”.
This is to promote Thai durians, especially the ancient breeds of durians and new hybrids. This will also give the tourists an opportunity to choose and buy any breed of durian they like. Mr. Sombat Tongtao said the free sampling and the fair would be also benefit the research and the economy.
He added that the department of agriculture has conducted durian breeding programs for three decades and developed the durian breeds continually. Today there are more than 500 breeds of durian under durian breeding and conservation program.
Thailand has compiled rare breeds of durian like Luang, Kampan and Thongyoi which were all near extinction because the farmers had switched from durians to other agricultural commodities.
This event will take place May19-20 from 10:30-12:00. Location: The Agricultural Nature Tourism Building Chanthaburi Horticultural Research Center.
Mr.Sombat Tongtao continued, the center could prepare only 18 breeds for the free sampling during the two days because this year, the weather was extremely hot and the durians ripened faster than usual and many durians ripened and fell out of the trees.
Mr. Vishid Shatapaisit Chanthaburi governor, confirmed that also in Pattaya there would be a durian event: the World Durian Festival from May 4-13.
Regarding the new durian hybrid called “Kanthong” scientific code: 11-341-1. Kanthong durian won the third prize in World Durian Taste contest.
Jirakorn Kosaisewee, the general-director of agriculture, said that this year the World Durian Fair will feature a contests of fruit decorated floats, beauty queens, Eastern famous fruits such as rambutan, durian, mangosteen, Rakam and Sala zalaccas and varieties of santol and Thai ridgeback dog, as well as booth displays of gems and jewellery and other farmer housewife groups.
There will also be many activities to promote agricultural occupations, like gardeners’ daughters beauty contest, five kinds of fruits contest (durian,rambutan,longan,mangosteen,and zalacca) and durian somtam contest, high quality OTOP durian sampling, frying and stirring durian demonstration, water sports and entertainment galore everyday.
He also said that, Chanthaburi Horticultural Research Center is located 15 kilometers from the center of Chanthaburi. The area occupies 206 rai. There is a center conducting research on important tropical garden plants from Central and Eastern Thailand, i.e rambutan, mangoesteen, durian, zalacca, wild mangoesteen, and herbs.
The center also provides eco-tourism activities: bird watching, nature walks, platations walks, sales of agricultural products, and conference rooms for rent..
Because of the Department of Agriculture, Ministry of Agriculture and co-operatives is located in Chanthaburi, it’s the duty of the province to conduct research and develop durian breeds, As of today the center has compiled all 500 different breeds of durians.
Chantaburi Horicultural Research Center has successfully restored many breeds which were on the brink of extinction and compiled durian breeds under the plant genetic preservation project, supported by Princess Sirindhorn.
