Dangerous Overloaded Sattahip “Songthaews” Carry 30 Students

The PDN reporter was informed by the Sattahip locals about overloaded songthaews carrying students in the morning and after school. Many of the vehicles driving at high speed in order to get more customers.

Sattahip, January 12, 2012 [PDN]; The Pattaya Daily News reporter went to investigate around Sattahip market along Sukhumvit road, number 3 route Sattahip-Pattaya where he found a white songthaew, (converted pickup truck with two long benches) plying the route Sattahip-Na Klua vehicle number 1631J-67, license number 10-1708 Chonburi. Packed in the songthaew almost 20 passengers and on the rear platform more than 10 students standing precariously. The platform millimetres from touching the tarmac. Most of the passengers were students were from Sattahip Technical College, Agriculture College and Chonburi & Sattahip Vittayakom school travelling daily Sattahip market which is more than 20 km from their colleges.

Pol. Col. Somchai Soonthavanick, Sattahip police station said, that many people, parents and teachers had complained with Sattahip police station regarding the overloaded songthaews also driving at high speed and endangering the lives of the passengers, pedestrians and other road users.

Sattahip police used to arrest the drivers who had broken the traffic and safety rules. Pol. Col. Somchai, said he will confiscate their driving licenses and prosecute the drivers who do not comply with traffic safety laws.
