The police were notified by Mrs. Vitchanee Srisawat, Vice President of Marketing Department of Workpoint Co., Ltd. about suspects hacking information from the call center of a popular TV program “ Ratcharotmakeuy” in order to steal donation money for the flood victims.
Mrs. Vitchanee said that “Ratcharotmakeuy TV” program had a call center opened to receive donations from viewers since October 24, 2011. A great number of people called to donate but after one week – no more calls came in not even when the program was on air.
So Mrs. Vitchanee tried to call the phone number of the TV program and one of the the suspects picked up the phone and claimed to be the call center staff.
She knew that the call center of the TV program was being hacked, even though she tried changing the phone number – but they still hacked it. After further inspection, Pol. Maj. Gen. Supisarn said that the call center system had been changed and transfers concerning the donated money to a bank account including several withdrawals.
The Crime Suppression Division (CSD) kept track of the suspicious transfers from TOT and the bank, before arresting Mr. Roongroj as he was visiting his friend in jail. The suspect confessed that he had withdrawn approximately 80,000 THB.
The suspect also confessed that he had hacked the call center of “Khao Khon Khon Khao TV” program and many other cable TV programs.
The police warns TV programs with call centers that they should monitor their telephone lines carefully and their computer systems to protect them from hackers.
