Sri-Racha, August 24, 2011[PDN]; Mr Vichit Chartpaisit Provincial Governor of Chonburi in the fight against drugs in Chonburi launched a joint operation involving the police, the army and relevant organisations on a drug inspection of the entire Koh Si Chang island.

On Mother Day, August 12, 2011, HM Queen Sirikit said she needed help from the government and all Thai people to solve the drug problem that had damaged Thai society for many years. In the past, the Thai mountain tribes use to grow opium. Thanks to HM King Bhumibol who set up The Royal Foundation to eradicate the opium plantations. Today the Thai hill tribes grow coffee, vegetables and strawberries instead. They do not grow opium anymore. Temperate and winter plants also make better revenue. These days HM The Queen’s is concerned about the widespread use of amphetamines among Thai people, threatening to ruin Thai society.

During the Koh Si Chang drug raid 30 suspects were arrested most of them drug addicts using amphetamines, ganja and one gun with ammunition. Mr Vichit Chartpaisit Provincial Governor of Chonburi said his priority is make to make Koh Si Chang Island a drug free area.
