"foreigners who purchase houses in Pattaya are often pursuaded by their Thai wifes." Why wouldn't they? If the marriage breaks up or she walks away from the relationship the house goes with her?

For this to really work, Thai Immigration has got to start "rubber stamping" retirement and long-stay visas making them more attractive and easier to get. The present hassles and reporting systems are an impediment. IMO.
