Mixed Martial Arts is Coming to Pattaya

Russian Karate Champ Sergei Plehanov in Action. A small piece of mixed martial arts history will be made this Saturday when ‘MMA the Beginning’, Thailand’s first ever dedicated mixed martial arts show, takes place in Pattaya.

There will be no fewer than 12 fighters in action with the highlight being the return of retired Russian Karate champ Sergei Plehanov who will be taking on Australian Eddy Hanna in the main event. Also on the card at the Pattaya Centre Hotel will be fighters from China, the US, Poland, Singapore and Thailand.

Mixed Martial arts is the fastest growing sport on the planet. Virtually unheard of a decade ago MMA events now regularly attract tens of thousands of fans and have been viewed by more than a million people at a time on pay per view in the US.

Popularly known as cage fighting or ultimate fighting MMA is a full contact combat sport that allows a wide variety of fighting techniques and skills, from a mixture of other combat sports, to be used in competitions. The rules allow the use of both striking as well as grappling techniques, both while standing and while on the ground.

The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) is the most recognizable MMA promotion on the planet and is home to most of the best fighters. However, while the UFC has become synonymous with MMA, there are a number of smaller promotions and ‘MMA the Beginning’ will be the first to take place in Thailand.

Promoter Bobby Gerrins has been involved in the sport for over 12 years and is an MMA instructor at the Ultra Fight Gym in Samut Prakarn,

“I think there is a huge gap in the market for MMA in Thailand because not a lot of people here know about it at the moment. There are so many good fighters here and so much interest in fighting that I think Thailand has the potential to produce a lot of fighters in the future. MMA is huge elsewhere in the world and in particular Russia which is home to perhaps the most famous MMA fighter of all time Fedor Emelianenko,” he said.

Who needs this crap of entertainment, just visit any beer bar late at night to watch drunken farangs/thais having a real fight with no rules with the option to use weapons.
