Pattaya 22nd January 2011, PDN: – Pattaya’s prestigious Thai Polo & Equestrian Club was once again an ideal venue for what is widely known as the foremost Polo Tournament in S.E. Asia, and this always draws a large attendance of “well to do” supporters, especially from Bangkok, in what is a leading social event.
This highly prestigious event has been sponsored for many years by the big Thai business organization of B.Grimm & Co. and this year was once again in conjunction with the well known German BMW car company. The Polo matches are backed up by other events, such as Derby Show Jumping, which is “Federation Equestrian International” (FEI) approved. Also the 80 Km Endurance Riding, is where the objective is not only time based, but also to ensure that your horse finishes in good condition, so there must be a balance between speed and endurance to qualify for a place. There is also a strong input towards children’s events, as the Thai Polo & Equestrian Club fully understands that these young players are our sporting stars of the future.
The final day of Polo gets started in before lunch, the grand final being played around 4.00 pm in the afternoon, so even those who are not Polo fanatics, found these matches both interesting and a very relaxing way to spend the day. The Thai Polo Club was finally victorious winning comfortably over their Malaysian opponents, and it is noteworthy that Club President Mr. Harald Link played together with his daughter Caroline. Some Polo experts believed that as individual players, the Malaysians were superior to their Thai rivals, but the difference was that the Thai Polo Team exhibited much better teamwork. This was due in no small measure to their world renowned instructor and coach Mr. Rege Ludwig, who has made the Thai Polo Club his home for the past two years.
In the past these events have been more or less free, but this year saw a departure with a minimum Bt.1,000 entrance fee being requested to cover the cost of lunch, etc and the mid afternoon “high tea.” In addition, this year saw the dispensation of the excellent evening dinner of past years due to ever increasing expenses of running such high class events. Many feel that the organizers would be completely justified in making set charges for what is undoubtedly one of Thailand’s “Hi-So” events of the year. Check the Thai Polo Club website for future match finals, as these are “must see” events on the social calendar that should not be missed.
