Pattaya, 5 December 2010 (PDN): On Sunday evening at the Bali Hai pier, South Pattaya, Pattaya City Mayor, Mr. Itthiphol Khunplume conducted a ceremony to celebrate HM the king’s 83rd birthday. A crowd of some 10,000 people had gathered, representing local administrations, state enterprises, educational institutes, hospitals, foundations, hotels and village communities, many of them clad in pink shirts. There were also a large number of students, traders, local residents, and tourists (both Thai and foreign). As a backdrop to the vast crowd, several portraits of the King, prepared by different groups, had been erected.

Mr. Itthiphol Khunplume told the crowd that it was an honour for everyone to gather together to offer congratulations to their beloved everyone His Majesty the King Bhumibol Adulyadej. He asked that the power of the Triple Gem (Buddha-Dharma-Sangha), and the ancestral spirits bless the Rama 9 King with ghappiness and to live long without sickness.

The crowds then joined in the ceremonial lighting of candles before singing the Royal Anthem. Finally the ceremony was brought to a close when 350 fireworks were let off in the Pattaya Bay.
