Central World Bangkok, torched by Red Shirts in the recent political disturbances, experienced further tragedy on Oct29 as two workers, conducting repairs, met their deaths and six others were injured, some severely, when parts of the building collapsed.

Bangkok, 31 October 2010: an investigative, rapid-response team of police, rescue workers and civil engineers reported that a cradle on the 7th. floor of Central World had fallen to the ground, along with its supporting steel framework as well as a number of substantial concrete slabs. A welding gas tank was also damaged and was leaking, provoking gas scares, until the fire brigade arrived to cope with the threat.

“When the response team arrived at 9.30am on Oct29, we found the bodies of two Chore Ayothaya workers lying beneath the rubble from the fallen debris. Mr. Phayom Homkhajon from Surin, had been sliced in half and his co-worker, Mr. Chat Sukdee was lying squashed beneath a fallen concrete slab. Six other workers who were injured were sent for immediate treatment to the Police Hospital,” Pol.Lt.Col. Colonel Kingkan Kanjanaphaisan, leading the response team, told PDN.

“Before the incident occurred, I and another 10 workers were working on the 2nd floor framework, removing the cement floor pieces and loading them onto a crane to be lowered down to the ground. Suddenly, the framework rapidly crashed down, carrying several workers along with it to the ground,” injured worker Mr. Sawat Niriengram told PDN from his hospital bed.

Subsequently, Central World’s representative, Mr. Phornthep, went to visit the injured in hospital. He found Messrs Phol Banluesap [54], and Bunlert Banluesap [44] with minor body bruises. Mr. Seree Banluesap [40] had a broken left leg, Mr. Sawat [37] was suffering head damage, Mr. Jamnion Bunyong [44], sustained stomach injuries and Mr. Jamnong Bunyong [17] lost his right arm. All but Messrs Phol and Bunlert had to remain in hospital for further examination.

Phatumwan Police Commander, Pol.Mjr.Gen Sumet, stated that collapse was tentatively thought to be a weight displacement error and the suspected lack of adequate safety precautions may render the contractor culpable. The mall has been closed until further notice and further investigation is underway to discover the exact circumstances of the tragedy, supervised by the Public Works and Planning Office.
