School Children Injured in Pattaya Hotel Lift Accident

Share
A group of schoolchildren and their teacher have been injured in a freak lift accident at a central Pattaya hotel on Thursday. The lift is thought to have plunged from the sixth floor of the building in unknown circumstances.

Pattaya, the 21st of October 2010 [PDN]: At approximately 8:30pm on Thursday, Lieutenant Colonel Phitak Nernsaeng (Pattaya Police Investigator) was notified by the Pattaya Memorial Hospital that a group of schoolchildren had been admitted suffering injuries resultant from a lift accident at the Sunbeam Hotel in Soi 8, central Pattaya.

Investigating the incident, a team of officers under the command of Colonel Nunthawut Suwanla-ong (Pattaya Police Superintendent) went to the scene.

On arrival at the Sunbeam Hotel, officers confronted Mr. Songwut Wongsiri [32], the guest relations service manager, who subsequently showed them to the lift at fault in the accident. The lift was marked out of order, while no external damage was immediately evident to officers.

Mr. Wongsiri explained that the lift, a maintenance lift, had suffered an unknown fault before falling and impacting with the ground, but not severely. He revealed that all the hotels lifts had been properly installed and regularly maintained in accordance with international standards. The injured had been transported to the Pattaya Memorial Hospital shortly after the accident.

At the hospital, officers revealed that there were six injured people in the accident, 4 students, Master Bulakorn Amornsongjarern [15], Master Phasakorn Rattanalium [14], Master Thanthorn Photjananuphap [15], Master Itsaraphong Phahonwet [14], their teacher Mrs. Phungphayorm Khanwong [32] and a hotel staff member Mr. Khajorn Burirak [25]. All involved had suffered varying injuries including broken bones.

In a statement to police, Mrs. Khanwong explained that they had been staying at the Sunbeam Hotel as part of a group of some 12 teachers and 112 students visiting Pattaya for a Mathematics Camp over the 20-22nd of October.

According to the report, Mrs. Khanwong and nine students had been awaiting the guest lifts on the 12th floor when they were prompted by Mr. Burirak to use the maintenance lift due to the larger weight limit afforded. While travelling down Mrs. Khanwong explained that at approximately the 6th-floor the lift violently jerked before plummeting to the ground, impacting severely and injuring most of the passengers.

At present, investigations continue into the cause of the accident, with authorities concerned over conflicting reports between the hotel administration and the injured party. Further interviews with the injured children will be conducted following their discharge from hospital.

please dont insult international standards Mr Songwut !! you wouldnt know what they were if they bit you on the arse!!even training of your staff Mr Burirak put people in a Goods lift? now in the real world of international standards you & your staff would be prosecuted & the hotel fined heaps of money plus compensation along with a independent ( non corrupt) investigation of the maintainace shedual, etc, etc, heads would roll mate & you or whoever? would never be able to work again in this responceable position of public trust, heath & safety would have a field day with you & the hotel Closed untill??? now this is international safety standards mate!!

The lift in my condo, Royal Thai Residence on Soi 7, Thapprasit road has freefallen/plunged many times since i have lived there. The managment does nothing in terms of correcting the problem but they did give a one time 500 baht refund on the monthly rent. When i sk them if the lift is safe to use they just smile/giggle, evade the topic.

Management of this hotel has been trying to improve its clientele by booking more tour groups in accordance with TAT's stated goals. Despite the renovations a few years ago this hotel is still a dump. However, the restaurant on the first floor of the old tower is fairly good.

Police speculate that the lift died of natural causes or possible overdose or suicide. The elevator was sent to the coroner's office for further interrogation.

I remember the lifts in Spain whilst on holiday as a kid back in the 80's they never had any doors on you just stepped in pressed the button and watched the wall start moving, how f'ing dangerous was that? Hope these kids are all back to running riot soon. Thailand is way behind the times when it comes to safety.

Hope this isn't going to become a worrying trend..Seem to remember a similair incident a few months back, at a totally different hotel!
That's the main problem with Thailand, there appears to be nobody formally regulating things like 'lift safety' or anything else for that matter...
Imagine a nuclear power plant and what could happen, with the thai 'mai pen rai' mentality...Scary indeed.
Hope the kids and their teacher, make a full recovery, with no lasting damage.
