PM Oversees Despatching of Aid Caravans to Flood Zones

Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva on Wednesday chaired a ceremony at the Bangkok City Hall, sending a humanitarian aid caravan and medical teams to help the people of the northeast in surviving the worst floods seen in over 50-years.

Bangkok, the 20^th of October 2010: The premier and officials of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) witnessed the dispatching of a caravan of trucks carrying drinking water, mobile toilets, medical teams, medical equipment, medicine, food and essential supplies to help citizens in the flood disaster areas, namely the province of Nakhon Ratchasima.

Premier Abhisit thanked and congratulated those involved with the caravan and those that helped to support the civil servants working to help victims of the severe flooding.

With waters from the Pa Sak Jolasit Dam and Chainat Dam reported at critical levels, the premier advised the BMA officials to be prepared for potentially high water levels in the Chao Phraya River from Wednesday night onwards as the waters flowed down the mainstream and its tributaries.

Mr. Abhisit is scheduled to travel to the central Thai province of Lop Buri on Thursday to inspect the second most flood-affected region, assess the damage and give moral support to the officials and victims of the flooding.

A Meteorological Department report advised that a cold air mass from China has now covered the northeastern, northern and central Thai provinces, with a decrease in the amount of rainfall expected at the temperature drop.

Areas already hit by flooding such as Phetchabun, Chaiyaphum, Nakhon Ratchasima, Saraburi, Lop Buri, Ang Thong and Ayutthaya are warned to expect minor showers over the next 24-hours, but nothing on the scale which has hit the regions over the last week.

Meanwhile, typhoon ‘Megi’ that has been battering the southern coast of China in the South China Sea is not expected to impact on Thailand, as it moves north towards Hong Kong and Macau.

Some would say, "too little, too late", or a "drop in the bucket" as to what is needed. A workable comprehensive disater plan that could be activated on short notice would be a good start. That would include personnel to answer the emergency needs phone number, something in my area isn't being done. A nationwide flood control program has been needed for decades, but like so many other things, apparently has recevied low priority.....
