Pattaya, the 11th of October 2010 [PDN]: At approximately midnight on Monday, Colonel Nunthawut Suwanla-ong (Pattaya Police Superintendent) along with a team of officers conducted an inspection of the Pattaya Beach Road promenade.
The inspection was undertaken after numerous reports and complaints were received by local authorities regarding the prevalence of ‘freelance’ prostitutes and lady-boys in the area. Many of these complaints pertained to tourists and locals being bothered, hassled and even robbed by the aforementioned groups, while walking the promenade during the evening.

In the inspection of the area, officers were able to detain and arrest some 50 offenders, both female prostitutes and lady-boys, who had gathered between North and South Pattaya. Reports indicate that many more of the loitering prostitutes managed to flee the scene upon being informed of the arrests.
Background, drug and criminal checks will now be performed on all of the 50 arrested offenders in an attempt to apprehend those who may be involved in further criminal acts.
Editor’s note: This is not the first time Pattaya police have attempted a purge on the Beach Road ‘freelancers’, it seems to be at least a biannual inspection. Most offenders end up being released with a Bt500 fine without so much as a mark against their names.
Unfortunately, the nature of the ‘game’ means that by taking Bt500 of these relatively desperate working women/lady-boys they inherently return to the very same act
as before, in an even more desperate state. However, the local authorities achieve quantifiable results in performing such inspections, with Bt25,000+ into the proceeds of crime ‘column’ to impress their superiors.
If authorities are determined to purge ‘freelance’ prostitution from public areas such as Beach Road, thereby confining the already illegal business to the local bars and/or Walking Street, simply arresting all the offenders is not an appropriate course of action.
Even prison sentences will not help the matter, largely for the desperation reasons already established, but also the Thai prison system is already notoriously overcrowded and not sufficient to house hundreds more relatively minor offenders.
Targeting the customers that use these women/lady-boys however would achieve marked results in a relatively short period. Eventually customers, foreign or otherwise, will not take the risk of interacting with the ‘freelancers,’ providing the fine/punishment is significant; therefore, the business is stifled in the public arenas and confined largely to the local bars and clubs.

"Purging" Beach Road of "Evening Blossoms" will have a 2 fold effect. Discourage some, but not many girl/katoeys and definitely discourage a whole lot of men who do not visit the beach to swim.
It will also make seeking physical companionship more expensive, elusive, and, potentially, more dangerous.
Like it or not, Government say so or not, Pattaya is not now, nor, if it is to remain a leading tourist attraction, will it ever be, a "family" destination.
will never happen and the cops
extorting money from tourists
for all sorts of reasons will
continue,but tourists will be
fleeced once or twice and not
come back,look whats happening
now,less & less Westerners are

Strange man.

If the police want to kill Pattaya's economy, than go on
disturbing the ladies and ladyboys.

To clean up the bars:
all bargirls over the age of 25 should be banned from working in beerbars or go-go-bars
Beach:
lady-boys should be banned
I have stayed in Pattaya (on a few rare occasions) although I live in Thailand. I was with my GF but the girls and katoeys pinched my arse all the way down beach road.
Clean up the city just like the rest of Thailands resorts and islands to make it better place. The editors comment is right but he/she seems to forget that all prostitution is illegal in Thailand.
The bars are struggling so get rid of the competition for the bars and everyone gets paid!!! TIT.
The main reason people won't return for a while, is the ridiculous strengh of the baht...
There will be no 'new' money arriving from people wanting either a holiday, or retirement home. People with money/property already out there, can try and do a bit of wheeler dealing (myself for instance) but nobody in their right mind, is going to send large amounts of money over at these current rates..
Dont worry the beach girls are all going to be on beach road and the ladyboys are still gona be haranguing and beating up on the odd farang stupid enough to wander drunk at 3 or 4am in the morning, with big money or gold dangling enticingly from their necks!
Kids are encouraged to leave school half-educated and to get out to "work" for the family. Widows and divorcees are reminded where their duties lie, particularly when they have kids to support. They have no experience of working and cannot earn a decent income. They get a chance to "take care" of a farang and thus to earn several times what they could earn in a Thai bonking shop and PDN says "suppress the customer" - keep them poor! Make them turn to real crime so the elite don't feel threatened.
Come on PDN - get real!
The Tourists will then go elsewhere to spend their money.
Then the desperation stakes will increase for these girls / ladyboys as there will be no money....!!!
It is a double edged sword, perhaps regular Police patrols will deter them.
Do you think that this measure is linked to the raids by Bangkok's finest on two bars in Soi 6.. maybe it has woken up the local constabulary..??
Get a life you sad, sad old men. Negative opinions abandon, you should all leave and/or not come back to Thailand with these attitudes. Anyone would think a developed Thailand with better morals, principles, ethics, standards, economy and laws was a bad thing by your opinions. Big up the Local BIB, get them tramps out of there so I can roller blade along the footpath and do an ankle!
Bring on the Spring 'Hooker' Cleaning!
Local cops and pimps will soon form a joint venture to extort money from tourist that merely take a walk on the Beach Road. Just as on the airport only Farangs will be targeted.
Even if what happens on the Beach Road is bad it is not a residential area and it is a part of a otherwise tolerated Pattaya-sex-industry.
This tactic of arresting the customer and in fact the prostitutes is the same one used in the states my friends and it works to certain extent, or at least limits the spread. Is that not the aim of this game by the police? Assuming it isn't just a money grab or show for their superiors of course.
Really if there were no beach road girls they would all be in the bars, oh, but you would then have to fork out extra to gain their services, right? Haha, cheap bastards. Calm down, you still have a few good years left in Pattaya even if there are no beach hoes.
IMHO, no hoes on the beach, would then leave a relatively easy job to catch the other devient types loitering there, would it not? Then the place could be marketed even more as a tourist resort, with the added incentive of the vibrant "rhino bar" nightlife not just a sess-pit like it is now.
One more thing, those that predict the demise of Thailand or even Pattaya because prostitution is cleaned up, seek help! Tourism equates to about 10% of Thailands economy at present, that is tourism in total my friends, not you bleeding "sexy man" tourists. For sure Pattaya's is higher, but not enough to collapse the local economy. Pumping money into making it the resort that it is so often touted as will ensure that people return eventually and possibly in greater numbers. Think about it! There are more non sex tourists and families in the world ain't there?
Pattaya's legs are closing you old devious men, piss off to the Filipines, see if Pattaya cares, haha. Or are these just hollow threats? Really not that bothered either way myself, I live in Rayong, where Pattaya wants to be, haha.
Clear the beach road and bars out and Pattaya turns into a ghost town and more buisness for Angeles City. Tourism is already down in Pattaya, they are just kicking it some more while its down.
Are the girls/ladyboys now involuntarily working for the police? What happens to the innocent and unsuspecting Farang who now just stops to sit on Beach Road and a Ho sits next to him? Is he arrested for soliciting as a John?
The basic socialogical act of friendliness of just acknowledging the girl is now deemed a risk? How sad. Just push her away and get fleeced by her for physical harm?
Goodbye Pattaya, your days are really numbered now. GREED!!!!
Thailands Greed, is its own worse enemy. Fleecing Farangs will be your demise in the end.
If they did do 24 hours on the beat instead of clocking off around 11pm and going to get drunk in a local bar spending what money they haad just extorted from some foreigner or some poor Thai person, they may get something done.Instead, again another bright idea designed specifically to again extort money from local people.
You say confine the "girls" to bars, PDN, but they raided the bars a couple of days ago. You say to arrest the very people bringing money to your economy - tourists...the fact that you do not is the ONLY reason they come to your lands.
The only reason Pattaya exists is because of the ladies from Isaan. They are your ambassadors - DO NOT FORGET THIS.
Keep this sham of "decency" up and no farang will ever come to Pattaya...the exchange rates are already killing it off, now this silliness.
This silliness brought on by hypocrites from the Middle East and India, who came to Pattaya the first or second time for sex, and the third time with their wives in tow - because they had to...now "complaining" about "what it's become" to save their sham marriages to their fat and ugly wives who they had to bring along after a few earlier sin trips to Pattaya with "the boys".
Go get the teen thugs that are dealing in drugs, guns, and human trafficking FIRST, Thai Police. The ones that do driveby snatches of necklaces and purses. The ones that pop themselves up the nose with a pen gun. The ones that build random violence apparatuses on their apartments.
Pattaya has bigger problems than poor girls from The North trying to provide for their families. FIX THE REAL VIOLENCE PROBLEMS FIRST, then clean up that cesspool you call a bay...you know, where you flush your toilets and expect people to swim in some grand resort fantasy.
It takes a hardened man to tolerate all that is Thailand, my friends. Yours is a dangerous land, where tourists are epidemically committing "suicide" from hanging off doors and TV brackets, and trying to fly off 14th story balconies "by accident" or found floating in the bay as someone tosses them off a boat.
It takes a hardened man to come to a place where crime is rampant and where personal safety is always in danger, particularly late at night when your weather is actually tolerable to venture outside for a walk.
It takes a hardened man to deal with the crooked and greedy vendors that infest your city.
Your ambassadors' greetings along Beach Rd to a farang man make him feel good about himself, and when a man feels good about himself he spends money, stays, or comes back for a visit. A man will not come back to a place where he is threatened by arrest for distributing his wealth to your poor, particularly if the system is less than ethical.
Stop biting the hand that feeds you Pattaya and Thailand. There are alternatives and a few of us are now considering more friendly places to go to visit with the girls, so you won't have any troubles at all..just empty condos, empty hotels, and empty restaurants and nothing but undesirable skinflints walking the streets - not spending ANY money.
So, if you make Pattaya unpleasant and more threatening to farangs than it already is, farangs will go to Vietnam, Philipines, or Costa Rica, meaning no work for the poor girls of Isaan, and starvation for their families (maybe that's the game - suppression of Isaan?). Farangs won't come, money won't be spent, your Beach Rd "cleanup" will happen on its own as your economy slides into the toilet.
Dumb dumb dumb.
Dear Auditor
We are talking about Beach Rd Pattaya. The moment you start to targeting the "customers" of prostitutes you will scare away any tourist to even walk on Beach Rd. Why you think 90% of all visitors of Pattaya come in the first place??? AND Why you think the girls from Isaan come to Pattaya?
In 95% of all negative incidents it is not the girls who start the problem. It is drug using Lady Boys and their pimps who bother any normal walking people.
I see no problems with some nicely dressed woman smiling at me while i walk Beach Rd. But these f%$#& Ladyboys piss me off!
