Bangkok, the 8th of October 2010: Thai customs officers on Friday arrested Mr. Saeid Golestani [25], an Iranian national, after he was observed acting suspiciously and attempted to bypass a baggage check at Thailand’s main international airport.
Mr. Golestani was asked to undergo a random baggage inspection after Customs observed him attempting to bypass an x-ray check with his baggage, namely a newly purchased microwave oven.
Resultant inspection of the device found that there was a concealment of some 3kg of Ya-Ice valued at approximately Bt10 million hidden inside the microwave.
According to authorities, the man had flown into the country on a flight from the Syrian capital of Damascus, via Abu Dhabi. Mr. Golestani has now been transferred into the custody of the Narcotics Suppression Bureau for further interrogation over his dealings.
In the first week of October, Customs Officers operating at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi International Airport have seized approximately 5.65kg of Ya-Ice, with an estimated street value of Bt19.8 million.
Meanwhile, in the last year alone seizures of the class-1 restricted narcotic have equated to some 135kg, with an estimated value of Bt470 million. In total, all drugs being confiscated at Suvarnabhumi Airport in 2010 are valued at an estimated Bt750 million.
In what is becoming a relentless operation to smuggle illicit drugs into Thailand, Iranian nationals worryingly make up over 50% of the arrested offenders in the past year (from October 2009). In a July 2010 release by the Customs Department, a report stipulated that over 50 Iranian nationals had been arrested smuggling drugs into Suvarnabhumi Airport since October 2009, a large portion of those came via the Syrian capital of Damascus or direct from Tehran.
