Thai customs official have reportedly seized some 90kg of ivory and over 5kg of crystal methamphetamine being smuggled into the country recently, according to Thai media reports.

Thailand, the 27th of September 2010: The seizure of 16 pieces (90kg) of cut ivory was detected by Thai customs officers after consignment, packing into four suitcases, was scanned in x-ray devices at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi International Airport.

Thai authorities have since arrested one suspect, 62-year-old Malaysian man, who had been attempting to smuggle the restricted product into the Kingdom on an Ethiopian Airlines flight from Addis Ababa.

Thai customs officers have seized nearly 5 tonnes of ivory entering the country in 2010, 2 tonnes in February, 1.4 tonnes in April and close to 800kg in July, all at the Suvarnabhumi International Airport.

Director of the Suvarnabhumi Airport passenger control customs bureau, Mr. Ekalarp Rattanarut said “strong measures” were being taken to ensure that procedures under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Fauna and Flora (Cites) were adhered to at every checkpoint across Thailand.

Meanwhile, Suvarnabhumi Custom’s officers on Monday arrested an Iranian national, Feizollahi Adel [25] at the international arrivals terminal in possession of 5.7kg of the class-1 restricted narcotic crystal methamphetamine (commonly known as Ya-Ice, Meth or Ice).

Arriving on an Emirates Airlines flight from the United Arab Emirates, Mr. Adel was subjected to the standard baggage scanning procedures, which uncovered the presence of the illegal narcotics hidden in microwavable containers.

Officers from Thailand’s Narcotics Suppression Bureau revealed the confiscated drugs have an estimated street value of approximately Bt728 million. Investigations are continuing into the source and destination of the drugs, while Mr. Adel has been remanded in custody.

This is like the 3rd time an Iranian has tried to smuggle a ridiculously huge amount of Ice into Thailand recently. Maybe they should just "smuggle" in the legal, basic ingredients separately and make it here... and these are the guys the U.S. says are building nuclear weapons?

By the way, why aren't the guys in the photo pointing at the evidence? How will we know that it is evidence if they don't point at it?
