Interior Ministry Move to Raise ED in Northeastern Provinces

The Thai Interior Ministry will propose a lifting of the state of emergency in three northeastern provinces, according to Minister Chavarat Charnveerakul on Thursday.

Thailand, the 23rd of September 2010: Reportedly, the Center for the Resolution of the Emergency Situation (CRES) will be asked to lift the emergency decree in Nakhon Ratchasima, Udon Thani and Khon Kaen provinces.

CRES is known to have ordered relevant security agencies to evaluate the overall situation to see if the decree could be lifted in all seven of the remaining provinces, however it is expected to remain in force on Bangkok and neighbouring provinces in light of recent random bombing attacks.

In regards to the three provinces seeking a return to relative normalcy, governors of the regions have reported a non-violent atmosphere and non-worrisome political movement to concerned authorities. Referencing the calm seen in the September 19 activities organised by the Red Shirts as a key reason why the decree should be lifted.

The controversial state of emergency decree in seven remaining provinces is due to expire on the 5th of October after being imposed during the April/May political turmoil in the capital.

At present, it is thought that an extension of the decree, branded as a violation of human rights by analysts, will be ordered for Bangkok, Nonthaburi, Samut Prakan and Pathum Thani due to a wave of recent bombing attacks and suspected underground movements still active in the area.
