Pattaya, the 19th of September 2010 [PDN]: At approximately 7:30pm on Sunday, Lieutenant Colonel Wallop Kangtharathip (Pattaya Police Investigator) was notified of a suspected foreign suicide at the Drunken Duck Guesthouse in Soi Buakhao, Central Pattaya. A team of police and rescue services were dispatched to the incident.
On arrival at the scene, a four-storey guesthouse with ground-floor bar, officers found the deceased man, Mr. Paul Louis George Verrieres [49], an Irish national, hanging from the television-shelf installed in his third-floor room. A bed sheet had been used as the noose.
Initial investigations did not reveal any apparent signs of a struggle or assault, while a chair, suspected to have been used in the suicide, was found knocked over on the floor. A minimal amount of personal effects were found still present in the room.

Interrogation of Miss Jurirat Polnara [23], the guesthouse owner, revealed that Mr. Verrieres had checked into the residence on the 10th of September, with no checkout date specified. Payment for the accommodation was not made upfront, while Miss Polnara revealed that the deceased had continued to avoid discussing
monetary matters on their brief encounters.
On the day of the incident, Miss Polnara explains that she had gone to Mr. Verrieres room to again inquire about payment, finding no response when knocking on the door several times. Using the spare key, she accessed the room to find Mr. Verrieres having committed suicide at which point she informed authorities.
Following investigations, Lt. Col. Kangtharathip explained that no visible signs of a homicide were present, speculating that the deceased had decided to commit suicide over possible financial hardships and/or depression. Mr. Verrieres body has now been sent for autopsy, while the British Embassy will be informed of the incident.
Editor’s note: Yet another suspicious case of foreign suicide in Pattaya is under-investigated by authorities. In the high-resolution (unedited) photographs and video, we see the deceased’s feet clearly touching the floor, which is unusual (he would have been able to stand). In addition, the usual telltale signs of a hanging were not evident on the deceased’s face.
“Police speculate that the deceased committed suicide over financial hardships”, 9-days debt from a room at a guesthouse in Soi Buakao would equate to under Bt10,000, assuming he was not running from further issues.
Owners Note (Greg Bonar): The man had issues stemming from a divorce in the UK, the breakup of his family and work related problems. He had drifted from hotel to hotel, leaving a trail of unpaid rent. He was suppose to leave on a flight back to the UK at 0130 the next AM, he stayed in his room most of the day, not wanting it cleaned or giving an explanation as to how he was going to pay for his stay.

My opinion is mind over matter, instinct, fight or flight. If there is one percent chance of standing, the 99 percent is overruled. (comments please!)
The next day the windshield was smashed out of his van(suspicious!!?) . The police did nothing further.
I am not a detective nor is it my responsibility to solve the case. I am looking for some kind of closure, it's been tough.
I've lost over 10 people that have a place in my heart in the
past 8-9 months and most under 25. Due to overdose and suicide.
I am trying to start an awareness group for all ages. I need to get the word out and also have a comfortable environment. No one who is troubled is going to seek help if thier uncomfortable or feel pressured.
90% of all foreign "suicides" in Pattaya are actually outright murder...
And the BIB have no investigative experience, no gloves, etc etc, so no justice will prevail. Another case solved so quickly.
RIP.
How, or more to the point WHY, does a tall farang stand on a chair the way that towel is tied around his neck? Why not just slump into it Carradine-style while standing on the floor?
Nope, sorry. He was hung there because there wasn't anything else in the room to hang him from to make it LOOK like there was a suicide...kick over the chair in true stupid Thai soap opera staging and now we're all supposed to buy it to be a suicide.
Now the picture of his hanging has been removed here (why the picture shuffle PDN - who demanded this?) to cover up the fact that the chair was a ruse to make it look like a suicide.
This poor guy was murdered. the missing pictures here make iteven more suspicious.
Another nail in Thailand's tourist coffin.
If he could touch the floor the bodies natural reaction is to save yourself and stand up. Strangulation made to look like hanging?
If he was skint over run you visa turn yourself into the boys in brown and get deported, don't kill yourself.
RIP
According to the above report:
"Paul Louis George Verrieres [49], an Irish national, hanging from the television-shelf installed in his third-floor room."
Can any reader tell us what is the maximal workload of the television-shelf (the total amount of weight it can hold)?
It appears to be too weak to hold the weight of a human and a TV concurrently.
Anyway, Mr. Verrieres, please RIP.
Thank you for reading.
While it is true for many susides , I dont think this is one of those cases.
RIP Mr Verrieres. i hope you find peace of mind.
Any trace of foul play will be lost.
OR, he spends 50,000 Baht to come to Thailand to hang himself from a TV stand because the TV stands in Ireland don't let your feet touch the ground.
Suicide? Don't think so.
