A speedboat carrying 19 Korean tourists and two crew has sunk in the Pattaya Bay on Thursday morning. Sixteen of the tourists have since been taken to the Bangkok Pattaya Hospital as a precautionary measure.

Pattaya, the 9th of September 2010 [PDN]: The vessel allegedly sank after the hull was breached significantly following a collision with a large piece of driftwood. All twenty-one people aboard the vessel had been issued lifejackets and where rescued shortly after the incident.

President of the Tourist Boat Association Sanit Boonmachai and a team of rescue officers attended to the incident, which occurred in the Pattaya Bay, between Bali Hai Pier and Koh Larn (Coral Island). The tour group had been returning to Pattaya following a brief diving trip to the nearby island of Koh Joon.

Reportedly the sunken vessel will now be salvage and transported back to Pattaya for investigation by authorities, while the capacity of the boat is thought to have been between 20-30 passengers and crew.

As a precautionary measure, 16 of the 19 Korean tourists aboard the stricken vessel were later taken to the Bangkok Pattaya Hospital for monitoring and minor treatment.

I assume the boat was properly certified and insured, and that the owner and crew had all the necessary licenses, certificates and documents in order for such operations?

If you go on of these boats, you're suicidal, that is my opinion.

I would have to agree with Hugh on this one. These Korean tour busses clog Beach Road when they eat dinner at the seafood restaurant which features fishing for shrimp with Ladyboys, then shortly thereafter, the Korean's tour busses clog up 2nd road in front of the 3 soapies and Soi 6 whilst they attend the Ladyboy Shows at Tiffanys, etc. This entertainment extends late into the evening as they each loiter around waiting to get their souvenir photo taken with the Tiffany's performer of their choice. All the while the busses are emiting noxious diesel fumes as they keep the air conditioners running. Both noxious and perverse I'd say.
