United States, the 7th of September 2010: Despite a late-start due to a backlog of matches, the world number one wasted little time in despatching with his opponent in what was a menacing display for his future opponents.

Set to wrap-up a career grand slam of titles if he wins this years US Open, Nadal will now face yet another of his Davis Cup team-mates in Fernando Verdasco, who advanced in a wearing five-set match against David Ferrer 5-7, 6-7(8), 6-3, 6-3, 7-6(4).
Stanislas Wawrinka ensured Switzerland would have two quarter-finalists at the Grand Slam for the first time, when he beat big serving American Sam Querrey in another gruelling five-set match ending 7-6(9), 6-7(5), 7-5, 4-6, 6-4.

Wawrinka’s opponent in the quarters will be Russian Mikhail Youzhny, who set about dispatching with Spain’s Tommy Robredo in convincing style, 7-5, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4. A semi-finalist at Flushing Meadows in 2006, Youzhny will be appearing in only his fourth quarterfinals appearance at a Grand Slam event.
On the other side of the men’s singles draw, Frenchman Gael Monfils will play world number three Novak Djokovic while resurgent world number two Roger Federer will line up against his Swedish adversary Robin Söderling.
