Police and fire crews were called to a blaze at the North Point Condominium development in Pattaya on Monday morning. The fire, contained to a construction site storeroom, is believed to have been started by an electrical fault, destroying millions in specialist construction equipment.

Pattaya, the 6th of September 2010 [PDN]: At approximately 11:30am, Colonel Nunthawut Suwanla-ong (Pattaya Police Superintendent) was notified of a fire at the North Point Condominium development in Soi Naklua 16 off the Pattaya-Naklua Road. A team of officers and five fire crews from the Pattaya Fire Department were dispatched to the scene to investigate.

Arriving at the scene, police found that the fire had been contained to a storeroom situated on the perimeter of the construction site. Due to the presence of highly explosive gas cylinders and paint products, fire crews setup a containment area around the site before extinguishing the vicious blaze in approximately 30-minutes.

A contractor working on the project, Mr. Pattiya Rangsathanya (Bwick-Thai Co Ltd), stated that the storeroom had been used to store various electronic equipment, gas cylinders, paint products, water pipes and finishing materials for the construction site. Mr. Rangsathanya stated that before the fire had ignited an electrical short had affected the storeroom and is believed to be the cause of the fire.

At present, investigative teams have called off an inspection of the premises due to its still volatile state. Damage from the fire is estimated at over Bt300 million, primarily from the loss of specialist construction equipment.
