Suggestions of what style and color of permitted underwear to be worn by the West Midlands police force was found pinned to the “message of the day” board, stating that appropriate color and style should be worn under their uniforms.
The staff who were advised to choose more inconspicuous colors and style have described the suggestions as “nannying”.
A brief that was issued to all staff stated that there were no new policies on underwear, but officers had to take a common sense approach and present a professional appearance to the public and remain smart.
The brief included other sartorial advice such as the wearing of baseball caps which should be worn only by officers in a particular unit. The move was criticized in the force magazine, Police Review with one comment saying “we are not a scouting organization”.
