Local authorities have begun the search for 4 middle-eastern men and a motorbike taxi driver wanted in relation to the attempted robbery of a Bangkok Bank ATM in Pattaya on Tuesday morning.

Pattaya, the 18^th of August 2010 [PDN]: The Bangkok Bank ATM facility near Soi 6/1 on Pattaya’s Beach Road was broken into in the early hours of Tuesday morning. The offenders, who gained access to the ATM’s rear by braking into a neighbouring shop, fled the scene empty handed after an alarm was triggered while they were attempting to use welding equipment to gain access to the cash storage compartments.

During subsequent investigations, the Pattaya police have identified the offenders, 4 males, being of middle-eastern appearance and having used a silver Toyota Vios in the attempted robbery. Three men were reportedly involved in the operation to gain access to the ATM maintenance room and adjoining mini-mart, while a fourth man stood guard at the front of the building.

In addition to CCTV footage at the scene, investigative officers have also found the local hardware/construction materials store that the offenders purchased their materials from, all of which appeared to be new. The owner subsequently informed authorities that the men had been accompanied by a local motorbike taxi driver at the time of making their purchase.

Under the command of Lieutenant colonel Tarathep Toopanich, volunteer officers conducted a re-enactment of the attempted robbery on Wednesday morning. Following the re-enactment officers deduced that it had taken the offenders approximately 1 hour to get to the point of setting off the ATM’s alarm, at which time they are thought to have fled scene.

After initial speculation that the attempted robbery may have been conducted by an employee of the Bangkok Bank, Manager Mr. Pravit Poo-Kasemwarangkul, revealed that their was a side entrance to the ATM facility which would have been used if the offenders had had intimate knowledge of Bangkok Bank buildings, facilities and procedures.

Accordingly, Mr. Poo-Kasemwarangkul stated that the ATM facility in question will now be closed for a short period so that repairs and various upgrades can be made in order to prevent further damaging incidents occurring in future.

In conclusion, Lt. Col. Toopanich stated that he expected to successfully apprehend the offenders in the next few days. Following which he appealed to the public to come forth with any information regarding the incident or whereabouts of the offenders in attempt to expedite their arrest.

Meanwhile, police will continue to search for the motorbike taxi driver involved in the purchasing of the confiscated equipment, who they believe may have intimate knowledge of all the offenders and/or their residence.
