Her Majesty’s 78th Birthday Celebrations Held Nationwide

Birthday celebrations for Her Majesty the Queen Sirikit were held nationwide in Thailand on Thursday evening. Candle-lit blessing and prayer ceremonies dominated proceedings with an arrangement of fireworks displays also organised in the capital and some other notable regions.

Bangkok, the 12th of August 2010: Thai’s from all walks of life, adorned in blue skirts (the Queens colour), gathered on Thursday evening to celebrate the 78th year of her Majesty the Queen Sirikit, offering blessings and prayer in this most auspicious of occasions.

In Bangkok, Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva presided over a ceremony at Government House. The event was attended by various cabinet ministers, diplomates and senior civil service officials. The premier expressed his gratitude and dedication to the Queen on behalf of the national, praising her dedication to the people without discrimination.

Also in the capital, ceremonies took place at the Dusit Palace, Ratchaprasong Intersection, Ministry of Education and the Sanam Luang ceremonial ground. Simultaneous displays of fireworks were setoff nationwide at 7:29pm, with a huge display witnessed at Sanam Luang.

Dusit Palace and Ratchadamnoen Avenue (Democracy Monument) played host to a variety of drama and cultural art ceremonies, honouring Her Majesty’s contribution to society and the betterment of all Thai people.

Included in the festivities was an exhibition titled ‘The Glorious Story of Rattanakosin,’ held at Lan Plabpla Maha Chedsada Bodin. A variety of floral exhibitions and three dimensional photo shoots were also arranged in Ratchadamnoen.

Merit making in the form of giving alms to local Buddhist monks was a popular way of celebrating Her Majesty’s birthday, especially for those Thai’s that were unable to attend one of  the numerous ceremonies. Various minor ceremonies were setup to stage alms giving, including in the southern provinces of Yala and Narathiwat.

For those not involved in the official celebrations, candles were lit and held to the sky in honour and respect of Her Majesty the Queen in numerous local community, villages and household events.

God Bless The Queen and The Royal Family. It means so much to serve them. Though I am not in Thailand I have a photograph of The Royal Family and, at least once every day, I bow down before it. It is so difficult to put into words how I feel about them. This sense of devotion, loyalty and love. I am encouraging my sons to bow too. For my own sons are the greatest gift I could ever give to The Queen. It is moving to watch them bow and then kneel. They are so young. They nearly topple over.
