Organised by the Asian Canoe Confederation (ACC) an instructional training course in Dragon Boat racing was held at the Sattahip Naval Base on Sunday. Attended by delegates from several Asian nations, the course is designed to improve the boating/rowing skills of Thai Instructors in preparation for several impending regional tournaments.

Sattahip, the 8th of August 2010 [PDN]: Held in the meeting room at Sattahip Naval Base, the 4-day seminar has been organised in conjunction with the International Canoe Confederation (ICC). The “ACC Dragon Boat (Traditional Boat) Coaching Course” was opened by Rear Admiral Niphon Jaksudun (Naval Base Deputy Commander & President of the Thailand Rowboat Association).

Appearing at the instructional seminar was Mr. Scaba Santo from the ICC (a former Czechoslovakian Olympic champion) to pass on his knowledge and insight to over 58 instructors and trainees from eight regional nations. Present at the seminar were representative instructors from, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Taipei, South Korea, Macau, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand.

Thai Rowboat Association Secretary General, Rear Admiral Chainarong Jarernrak stated that this instructional seminar was the first of its kind to be held in conjunction with both the ICC and ACC. He revealed the unique arrangement as an opportunity for both Thai and foreign instructors to gain exclusive insight into the fine points of traditional boat racing.

Thai instructors were encouraged to teach their students the knowledge they had gained in preparation for the impending ASIAN Games 2010 in China and next years 26th SEA Games in Indonesia

At present, Thailand is not considered one of the premier competing nations in boat racing at regional tournaments. Indonesia, China and Burma have traditionally had the top competitors.
