Fear of Further Bombings Amidst Rangnam Explosion

Another explosive device has been detonated in the Thai capital of Bangkok on Friday morning. The blast, seriously injuring one man, was detonated in front of a popular King Power duty-free shopping center on Rangnam Road.

Bangkok, the 30^th of July 2010: The bombing scene, near several schools, shopping complexes, recreational parks and numerous popular hotels such as the Pullman Bangkok King Power, has prompted fears that further attacks on the capital will evidently cause panic, chaos and the death of more innocent civilians.

At present, investigating specialists believe that the bomb was another crudely rigged grenade, specifically an M-59 grenade popular with the Chinese army. Explosive experts have ascertained that the device was similar in construction to previous blasts in the capital, namely Sunday evenings attack at the Ratchadamri Road bus stop.

One man, believed to be a local recycled materials collector, has been taken to a nearby hospital suffering from severe shrapnel wounds to the legs, chest and head. He has reportedly lost sight in his left eye as a result of the injuries. Despite CCTV footage being available at the scene, the images are said to be “unclear” and unhelpful in the search for the perpetrator/s.

Following the incident, General Panupong Singhara (Investigative Team Head) revealed that the explosive was a Chinese made grenade, not used by any division of the Thai Defence Force. Gen. Singhara also pointed to the need for all Bangkok residents, visitors and tourist to assist police in reporting any suspicious people, items or acts, controversially stating that more attacks are expected while the offender/s remains at large.

Security measures in place on the capital will be increased whilst people are being urged to be more cautious in public areas or “high risk” locations. Both recent attacks have occurred after dark at popular shopping/business locations and have used rubbish bags/piles to conceal the devices.
