Strange Traditions and Practices at Wedding Ceremonies

  • Share/Bookmark
A wedding is the most wonderful and happy occasion, full of laughter in some cases, while for others, it can be insanely bizarre.

Many couple can trace their beginning back to the first time they set eyes on one another from across that crowded room and when they sealed their fate with a quickie on the back seat. Though for most cultures, some have decided to forego all the romantic paraphernalia, going for total strangers and straight into marriage

The Romany also known as Gypsies, have for hundreds of years kept to their tradition of forcefully kidnapping a girl and keeping her by your side for 2-3 days, when she then officially becomes your wife. This would probably made sense in days gone by, as it helped the man as he would not have to buy the bride from her family in the form of a dowry. Even in this day and age, it is not much different for the Romany.

The Santhal tribe in India believes that if a baby girl has a tooth rooted to her upper gum, it is a sign that she will be eaten by a tiger at some stage of her life because ghosts hate her, so she must marry a dog. However, she does not have to consummate the marriage and is able to marry a man when the time comes. The wedding to the dog is merely to ward off any evil spirits, a sort of exorcism.

Western culture has its own superstitions, especially where weddings are concerned. Something old, something new, something borrowed something blue and no looking at the bride from the night before the service or you will have to endure three stitches to your right temple.

Blackening the bride is a practice from Scotland. The Scots eat sheep innards, wear skirts (kilts) and instead of throwing rice, they throw smelly things like eggs or sauces at their brides to be.  This custom dates way back and is very old. It actually happens prior to the wedding day when the bride to be is pelted with all kinds of crud and rubbish such as soured milk, tar, and feathers or eggs covering them from head to toe.

Why this happens is any ones guess, tradition can be strange and wonderful or just downright silly.

Sadly half of all marriages end in divorce, and the results can be tragic. I've know men who have been ordered to pay spousal support to an ex wife for LIFE! Of course the bit*h will not remarry because she would lose her income stream and the pleasure of destroying her former husbands life.
