Pattaya 28th July 2010 [Spain] The vote that may lead to many other regions voting against, will take place after a petition brought to parliament showed 180,000 signatures stating that the practice is from the dark ages and barbaric. Supporters of the ‘corrida’ (bullfighting), say it is an important tradition and a part of Spanish history, an art form that needs to be preserved.

The vote which is to take place today could bring an end to Spain’s long and traditional battle against man and beast. Barcelona has the oldest bullring in Spain, but the support for bullfighting is no longer popular here.
The petition was brought to the attention of the Catalonia parliament by activists who argued that bullfighting is no longer acceptable and cruel, saying most spectators these days are tourists.

The vote for and against is expected to be close as the two parties in parliament are allowing the members to cast their ballots according to conscience, but while the debate is officially over animal rights, many believe this process is an attempt by the nationalists to mark their difference from the rest of Spain by rejecting their best traditions.
Pro-bullfighting groups believe this could spark a wave of campaigns across the rest of Spain which will threaten the livelihood of thousands of people.
