Lucky Escape as Lift Plunges 10 Floors at Pattaya Hotel

Share
Sixteen people have been injured in a devastating lift accident at the Welcome Jomtien Hotel in Pattaya on Saturday. The group had entered the lift at the 18th floor before an unknown power failure resulted in the lift freefalling 10 floors before hitting the ground level.

Pattaya, the 24th of July 2010: At approximately 6:30pm on Saturday, Lieutenant Colonel Klitsakorn Thongin (Pattaya Police Deputy Superintendent) was notified of a lift accident at the Welcome Jomtien Hotel on Jomtien Beach Road. A team of officers along with the Sawang Boriboon Foundation were immediately dispatched to the incident.

At the scene, on the ground floor of the Welcome Jomtien Hotel, officers managed to forcefully open the lift doors to free the trapped people. Upon opening the doors, 16 people were found inside, in varying states of injury or shock. Five were sent to the Pattaya Memorial Hospital, while the remaining 11 were transported to the Pattaya International Hospital.

Mr. Preecha Donphutsa, one of the injured revealed that the group had all been to a work seminar on the 18th floor of the hotel. He stated that they were returning to their rooms on the fourth floor when the lift inexplicably lost power and begun a freefall from the 10th floor before impacting with the ground level. In a state of shock he exclaimed, “it is very lucky no one was killed because of this accident.”

Investigations are continuing as to the cause of the accident, with lift specialists already contacted to assess why emergency brakes did not stop the lift from falling after the power failure.

There could be many reasons...poor maintenance, low quality locally manufactured lift etc etc...

Doesnt surprise me. They repair and maintain nothing in this country. They live with the practice that when it brakes we will stop eating and fix it.

I think 'free-falling' is a bit of an exageration. The upper winch mechanism would have slowed this down to some degree. The emergency brakes probably failed because they were not fitted properly or the interlock mechanisms were bridged as a quick fix on a service call.

If this lift really had been free-falling 10 floors then we would no doubt be talking about many fatalities.

Usually the counter weights will keep a lift from falling, but not when overloaded! These probably did slow it down some though, unless of course both of the cables failed simultaneously, or was this some poorly designed lift with only one cable. Looks like there was a lot of broken legs!

Like many have commented, the lift was almost certainly overloaded, however this alone would not have been enough to cause the lift to freefall. Poor maintenance and/or an old lift, not upgraded to current standards, may be a factor here.

Remarkably, the amount of people in the damn lift probably saved the loss of life in a 10-storey fall.

Even small lifts, like the ones in many Bangkok "old city" hotels, have capacities of +500kg (6-7 people). Most these days hold at least 10-15 people, in excess of 1250kg.

Weird and unfortunate accident, regardless of the reasons.

Sorry, but i don't believe that a free fall from a ten floor causes so little damage. There had to be something slowing the elevator down.

Maybe the elevator was overloaded and the emergency breaks could not make a full stop because of that.

Just as plausible as the emergency breaks were not working.

If a lift is overloaded the warning alarm will sound and the lift will not operate untill the loading weight is back within the operating limit, unless khun Lek knows better than the manufacturer,...... this will only happen if someone fucks with the setup.

The Welcome Jomtien Hotel is in Jomtien - not Pattaya.
The lifts in that hotel are not big, definately not designed for 16 people, max 8 if i remember correctly!

- Lack of power would not prevent the brakes operating!!

- Did not know any lifts in Pattaya could hold 16 pax?

- Had the brakes had their Ferado pads serviced?

Sixteen people was probably way over the legal posted limit. They should be charged for the damage if that is true.

Maybe they thought it is like getting on the Bangkok Sky Train.
