An inquiry is to be opened following IBO cruiserweight champion Danny Green’s 29-second knockout victory over Paul Briggs in Perth last week. The match ended following an ominous punch to the head of Briggs who had recently returned to competition after a three year absence.

Perth, the 24^th of July 2010: The Western Australian Professional Combat Sports Commission (WAPCSC) revealed that they would be looking into the promotion, arrangement and conduct of the fight under section 47 of the Professional Combat Act, according to the Associated Press on Friday.

Australian cruiserweight champion Danny Green (30-3) knocked out his compatriot and title contender Paul Briggs (26-4) after 29-seconds of the first round. The knockout blow, a tame hit to the top of Brigg’s head, has sent shockwaves throughout the sport in Australia.

The fight had already been moved to Perth from Sydney at the last minute following a refusal by the New South Wales Combat Sports Authority (NSWCSA) to sanction the bout, citing fears over contender Paul Brigg’s fitness. Briggs had not fought in a competitive bout in nearly three years prior to the Green encounter.

Showered in beer by angry fans following the bout, Briggs was temporarily taken to a nearby hospital for checks, but his condition remains unclear at this stage. Immediately following the fight, Danny Green declared that Briggs would not be payed his appearance money due to his “poor showing.” However, after viewing the video footage of the fight Green revealed that Briggs would be paid in full and was genuinely hurt in the fight.

Prompting the probe was alarmed bookmarkers revelations of a massive surge in first round knockout predictions immediately prior to the fight. Both TAB Sportsbet and Centrebet reported astronomically irregular bets prior to the much anticipated bout.

“The volume of bets, at the height of it all, they were coming in every 30 seconds. We probably held more individual wagers on a round one knockout in this fight than we have in combined fights in this country in the last 20 years,” Centrebet media director Neil Evans reported.

“Boxing’s been kicked in the guts a million times and this is the most farcical thing we’ve probably seen in many years in this country.”
