Bangkok, the 20th of July 2010: The 45-year-old man, now known to be Mr. Surachai Kerddee, was arrested after throwing a bag of his own faeces at the Mae Phra Thoranee (Earth Goddess) statue in the Democrat Party headquarters compound.
Allegedly, Mr. Kerddee did not try to flee the scene after his attack, waiting patiently for officers to arrive and arrest him. Party officials are reportedly unhappy with security who had been given a photograph of Mr. Kerddee following the incident in March. He was allegedly marked as a restricted citizen (persona non grata) at the party headquarters.
Mr. Kerddee performed a similar attack in March at which time he was unhappy with the lack of progress the government had made in dealing with a complaint and their alleged interference with the media.
Party spokesman Buranat Samutarak said that party administration had not anticipated a further act of this nature
by the same person, while stating that the government had tried to address Mr. Kerddee’s prior complaint.
As a result of the incident, the Democrat Party is now considering upgrading its security measures at the headquarters, including the installation of additional CCTV surveillance cameras to prevent further attacks.
In addition to Mr. Kerddee’s two attacks at the Democratic Party Headquarters, bags of human and animal waste have also been thrown at Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva’s residence in Bangkok over the last 6 months. The most recent attacks occurred in February and March. I both incidents the attacks were arrested following brief police investigations.
