Abhisit Informs US Envoy of Possible Early Election

In a meeting with the United States Secretary of State for Political Affairs William Burns, Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva reaffirmed that a general election is likely to take place early in 2011 providing national reconciliation plans yield positive results.

Bangkok, the 16^th of July 2010: According to the Deputy Secretary-General to the Prime Minister, Mr. Panithan Wattanayagorn, the premier spoke formally with Mr. Burns about the success of Thailand’s national reconciliation plan as well as the controversial subject of a general election. Other matters discussed involved the further cooperation between the two countries through, trade, investment and national security measures.

“The US has good understanding and always closely monitors the situation in Thailand. They shared common idea with the Thai government on the reconciliation plan. Today’s meeting between Mr Abhisit and Mr Burns is only an exchange of general ideas on the situation here and political development,” said Mr Wattanayagorn.

Initially premier Abhisit expressed his gratitude to the US after Congress voted 411-4 in support of Thailand’s effort to work at resolving the nation’s differences. The resolutions and reforms that were largely outlined in the prime ministers five-point national reconciliation “road map.” In response to questions regarding fresh elections, Abhisit revealed that a general election is preliminarily planned for early 2011, provided the reconciliation and reform plans are maintained and produce positive outcomes.

Clarifying the contentious matter of the extension of Emergency Laws in Bangkok and 18 other provinces, Abhisit explained that the added measures are still required to enable authorities in those areas to properly manage the situation and restore normalcy. The premier assured Mr. Burns that all procedures and extensions of the decree were indeed necessary and enacted in accordance with the Thai constitution.

Agence-France-Presse quoted Mr. Burns as having said that he hopes the emergency decree imposed on Bangkok since April will be lifted in the near future. Further stating that Americans had been “deeply saddened” by the violence which has occurred in Thailand recently, in which 90 people died and approximately 1,900 were injured during anti-government protests.

Mr. Burns, the US State Department’s third official, is currently on a regional tour of Asia, which will see him visit the Cambodian capital of Phnom Penh on Saturday ahead of trips to Indonesia and the Philippines respectively.
