Sae Daeng’s Aide Arrested over Bangkok Attacks

The former aide of deceased Major General Khattiya Sawasdipol was arrested on Thursday over several attacks carried out during the recent 2-month occupation of Bangkok by Red Shirt protesters.

Bangkok, the 15^th of July 2010: On Thursday, Department of Special Investigations (DSI) Director General Tharit Pengdit revealed the successful apprehension of Surachai Thewarat [25]. Mr. Thewarat is a known aide of now deceased Red Shirt military strategist Maj Gen Khattiya, better known as Sae Daeng.

Mr. Thewarat was wanted on terrorism charges for his part in numerous grenade and gunfire attacks on Bangkok during the recent political protests. He has since admitted to various attacks, claiming that Sae Daeng had been the mastermind behind the violence.

At present, Mr. Thewarat is accused of firing up to ten M79 grenades into a police guard station around Lumpini Park on May 15^th and of being one of the black gunmen responsible for firing upon police at the Saladaeng intersection throughout May. DSI director-general Pengdit revealed that Mr. Thewarat was implicated in the attacks after his mobile-phone signature was intercepted from the locations, which is also how they tracked him prior to his arrest.

He has since confessed to having been involved with the attacks, claiming that Sae Daeng was the mastermind behind the incidents and was responsible for training both himself and others with the use of weaponry, fighting tactics and various ways to conceal their activities.

Reportedly, Mr. Thewarat and other members of the team decided to flee Bangkok following the death of Maj-Gen Khattiya. He had gone across the border into Cambodia, returning recently to take part in what he describes as a “big job” planned for the near future.
