Third Consecutive Team Winners Medal for Thailand

This year’s entry for Thailand at the ongoing IODA Asian Championships ensured the countries proud tradition in the event, winning their third consecutive team title. The win was even more pleasing as they beat fierce rivals Malaysia and Singapore on the way to the title.

Pattaya, the 8^th of July 2010 [PDN]: In conjunction with the Yacht Racing Association of Thailand (YRAT) and the Royal Varuna Yacht Club, the IODA Asian Championships entered its 5^th day of competition yesterday. The main event of the day being the final of the team racing which saw reigning champions Thailand face fierce rivals Singapore after some exciting knockout races.

Following some 20 entertaining knockout matches which saw Thailand’s A-team beat Hong Kong, Thailand B-team and Malaysia to reach the final against Singapore, the Thai’s duly won the title 2-1 in a three round grand finale. The win for Thailand gives them their third team title in succession following wins in Qatar (2008) and Malaysia (2009).

The Thai national A-team was admirably led by former Female Optimist Champion Miss Nopphakao Phoonphat and consisted of Master Thotsaphon Mahawichian, Master Jirawat Jadklai, Master Don Witcraft, and Master Thatcharin Narbonn. The team, faced with intense media expectation, achieved what was expected of them with the win despite losing the first round of the grand final they recovered, winning the remaining two rounds, to take the title.

The official standings for the team competitions saw Thailand finish first on -13 points followed by Singapore on -23 and the Malaysians in 3^rd. Racing action will continue in the IODA Asian Championships 2010 until the 11^th of July.
