Pattaya, the 5th of July 2010 [PDN]: The Yacht Racing Association of Thailand (YRAT) in conjunction with the Royal Varuna Yacht Club launched the IODA Asian Championships on Monday. This years tournament features the largest ever field of competitors, with 103 boats from 20 countries competing.

Sponsors for this year’s event include; Marine Base, Bangkok Pattaya Hospital, Minor Food group, Pizza Company, Swenson Ice cream, Sizzler, Dairy Queen, Burger King, Coffee Club, Winner, JVK International Mover, and The New Door.
Monday saw the commencement of competitive action, which will now run until the 11th of July at the Royal Varuna Yacht Club in Phratamnak Hill. The championship is a strictly youth (under 15) competition and holds international certification in the yacht racing community.
This years competition features participants from a host of nations including; Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, South Korea, Taipei, Malaysia, India, Iran, Qatar, Philippines, Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Slovenia, Spain, South Africa, the Netherlands and Thailand.

Former Female Optimist Sailing Champion Miss Nopphakao Phoonphat [14] is leading the Thai team, consisting of 15 competitors. Miss Phoonphat won the crown at the Brazil championships in 2009.
Despite low winds and an enforced break for inclement weather, the first day of racing was competitive. At the completion of the second round, Carlos Lorente of Spain leads the field, tied with Muhammad Fisal Norisan from Malaysia on -6 points. Thailand’s Thotsaphon Mahavichain is in third place on -7 points.
