A convicted felon, recently released from prison, has been arrested in Chiang Mai on Sunday. The man was apprehended after numerous reports of theft in the Saraphee region implicated him as a suspect.

Chiang Mai, the 4th of July 2010 [PDN]: At approximately 9:00am on Sunday, Senior Sergeant Major Phayab Mongkonthip and an investigative team from the Saraphee Police Station apprehended a man wanted for involvement in a series of thefts in the area.

The man, now known to be Mr. Atthaphon Nimitsin [21], had been accused of at least two thefts in the region and was suspected to have committed several others. Mr. Phongsak Chikaew [42], living in Laeng Yangnerng Market, reported the theft of an amount of Bt1,000 in 10 and 20 baht coins from his house whilst Mrs. Petchara Bunchum [45] from Chomphoo reported that a number of personal possession had gone missing from her market stall in Laeng Yangnerng. Both victims informed police that they had suspected Mr. Nimitsin of committing the crimes.

Investigations following the arrest of Mr. Nimitsin uncovered a variety of reported stolen items stored at his residence including; a wooden bowl (money box), 4 packets of sanitary napkins, baby powder, body lotion (face cream) and 2 boxes of candles.

Mr. Nimitsin has since confessed to the thefts explaining to police that he had recently been released from prison (serving time for theft) and was finding it hard to make a living. He stated that he had committed the thefts in order to survive or be arrested and sent back to prison where he would at least be fed regularly.

The offender has now been charged with multiple counts of theft and will be remanded in police custody awaiting further judicial proceedings to commence. Police suspect that Mr. Nimitsin had offended on several other occasions due to the increased amount of reports filed for theft at the Laeng Yangnerng Market and surrounding area recently.

Something needs to be done to break this circle of poverty, despair, offending, prison. I'm not sure what can be done but we read too often of such cases.
