Pattaya, the 3rd of July 2010 [PDN]: At approximately 3:00am on Saturday, Lieutenant Colonel Klitsakorn Thongin (Pattaya Police Deputy Superintendent) instigating a series of vehicle checkpoints along Sukhumvit Road was notified of an offender breaking through a checkpoint in Central Pattaya.

The offender, now known to be Mr. Thanong Attano [34], broke through the checkpoint riding a red-green Nova Dash motorbike. Having passed through one checkpoint Mr. Attano then ditched his motorbike and ran off into the gardens of the Park Pattaya Hotel with a team of 20 police officers on his tail.
Reportedly, Mr. Attano brandished a handgun on the pursuing officers before running off to hide in the hotels grounds. Following a short search officers’ successfully apprehended the suspect without incident and confiscated the weapon along with 17 bullets and 2 magazines.

Under interrogation, the offender claimed to have had an argument with his wife over money before he left his home with the gun to go and get something to eat. He explained that he had purchased the weapon from a local teenager for Bt20,000. Mr. Attano continued to claim that he had not intended to use the weapon and was merely carrying it for protection. He revealed that he had attempted to escape apprehension, as he was frightened of being caught with the firearm and a modified motorbike.
Officers are reluctant to believe Mr. Attano’s statement, who has subsequently been charged with illegal firearm possession and possession of a firearm in public without authority. He has now been remanded in custody awaiting further judicial proceedings.
