Thai PM Abhisit Unfazed by Renewed Assassination Threats

Thailand’s Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva yesterday revealed that he was personally unfazed by rumors of a purported assassination attempt against him. He did however order tightened security for all the nations’ key figures. In conjunction with Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban, Abhisit also ordered an extension of the state of emergency act currently in place on the capital.

Bangkok, the 1^st of July 2010 [PDN]: The Thai Premiers remarks came after the National Police Chief General Pateep Tanprasert revealed that intelligence reports indicated an assassination plot against the countries key figures is thought to have been developed by various unidentified groups.

PM Abhisit stated, “For me, I’m not worried. When some parties want to use violence, I have to be more cautious.” Further asking anyone who has or is threatened to inform the relevant authorities immediately so that an investigation can take place. He questioned the use of violence in solving political grievances and the inability of a functioning, efficient democracy forming in such times.

In addition Premier Abhisit along with Deputy Premier Thaugsuban agreed to extend the Emergency Decree, indefinitely, as a result of the aforementioned concerns whilst added security will be in place at several governmental buildings, offices and residences of leading officials and politicians.

Meanwhile, police Lieutenant General Tritot Ronnaritivichai (Special Branch Police Commander) stated the Deputy PM Thaugsuban, in his capacity as the director of the Center for the Resolution of the Emergency Situation (CRES) has setup security measures at some 40 potential target locations around Bangkok.

Further to the upgrade in security at buildings such as the Supreme Court, Government House and Parliament House, Metropolitan Police Deputy Chief Colonel Songpol Wattanachai revealed that an urgent meeting has been called with the district police chiefs of Bangkok to organize more potential proactive security procedure under consideration.

Suspected sabotage targets such as fuel depots and electricity sub-stations have also been highlighted in the tighten security measures which include up to 68 high-risk locations. Armed police will be deployed at these locations 24/7 to ensure possible attacks are prevented.

On the one hand he dismisses violence as an acceptable means to achieve democracy, on the other his troops shoot to kill mostly unarmed protesters over the last few months by his own orders.
