The international Meetings, Incentives, Conventions & Exhibition (MICE) Industry has been welcomed into Thailand with Pattaya officially designated, the first “MICE city” on Thursday.

Pattaya, the 1st of July 2010 [PDN]: Thailand Convention & Exhibition Bureau (TCEB) Director Mr. Akkaphol Sorasuchat joined with Pattaya City Mayor Itthiphol Khunpluem in announcing the organization of Thailand’s participation in the MICE Industry. MICE Industry is an initiative to change the way businesses promote and market their products through the use of Meetings, Incentives, Conventions and Exhibitions.

MICE Industry is one of the fastest growing segments within the tourism industry generating millions in revenue for cities and countries worldwide. Europe and the United States still remain the major markets in respect to the number of meetings, conferences and exhibitions held, however Asia is progressively accepting the innovative concept.

Mr. Sorasuchat revealed that the project has been accepted in Thailand, with Pattaya being the initial trial location due to its significance in the tourism/business tourism market for the nation’s economy. The scheme will help strengthen the bonds between international and local businesses whilst further educating the local population of the significance that MICE tourism has on the economy.

Following the introduction of the MICE concept into Pattaya, planned expansion to Chiang Mai, Songkhla and Chon-Buri have been announced to further subjugate the scheme. The main ideal of expanding the initiative nationally is to further aid Thailand’s economic recovery after the recent political unrest and the continuing global economic crisis.

The renewed focusing on business tourism is put down to the TCEB’s estimates that over 10% of Pattaya’s annual 5 million tourists along are part members of the MICE industry sector. Further to this the TCEB speculate the MICE industry representatives input approximately 3 times the amount of income into the Thai economy as the average holidaying tourist.

Along with its significant importance to the Thai tourism industry, Pattaya was selected to be the first city to implement MICE Industry initiatives due to is successful track record in staging business events and tourism related festivals in the past.

Meetings, Incentives, Conventions & Exhibition (MICE)
I think the acronym is funny.
A city with outdated infrastructure
, corruption from the top down, and an unwillingness to do anything about it.
I'm sure that it will be WONDERFUL for those people that come to these events on the government, or company, dime !
